    Warhammer 40,000

Hello all, not sure if this will be popular or not..but here goes.

Who on these forums collects Warhammer 40,000 or any Warhammer figures, and if you do, what do you collect?

Myself, I collect Warhammer 40,000 figures.

    I collect Imperial Guard

Have been collecting for a while, although not been able to do anything for a good year or so due to being busy with college, Uni and now work and on top of that, I dont have the space to paint or put the models together.

    I currently have: -

    Leman Russ (Tank)
    Sentinel (Walker unit)
    Chimera (Tank)
    Catachan Jungle Fighters
    Cadian Shock Troops (Picture below)
    Commissar Yarik

That's a VERY small portion of what I actually want.

I want to build up an army based on the Imperial Guard codex (none collectors won't know what this is I suspect).

Why did I choose Imperial Guard?

My step and brother collect/ collected various Space Marine type units (Picture below), basically unit's with some form of armor or another. I decided that these looked kind of..panzy like and that they were having to hide behind their armor.

So, I decided that I would go for something a little more human, a little more manly and a little more human. Another of my main draws to the Imperial Guard is the armor, the men can be backed up by an armored core unit, which consists of between 12 - 24 tanks.

For those who have never heard of Warhammer/ Warhammer 40,000/ Games Workshop, whatever you want to call it, then check out there website here.

I've always wanted to get the Eldar/Dark Eldar figures as they have that look about them but never had the space until recently.

    Re: Warhammer 40,000

I loved collecting them when I was a kid but I couldn't afford many. Now that I can afford them I have little interest in actually collecting them.

I still get a kick out of the whole WH40k thing though, I love the really well painted models and dioramas people come up with.

I love the custom models people come up with, I sit and kind of think..WOW why cant I do that.

I got into collecting via my step dad, he had some old ork models that he didnt use or need so gave them to me and my brother to paint. From then I loved them.

Indeed Lee those Eldar/ Dark Eldar do look kinda..I dunno, you see a squad on the table and think "oh f**k!". Space is the major for me as well, I used to have a little more space, not much but it gave me somewhere to paint.

I remember painting one of these: -

While watching cable guy..the model took around 7 or 8 hours to paint and put together, including undercoating, painting each bit individually and then putting it back together and touching up any area's that needed it after being put together, and I loved doing it.

The main issue/ factor is the cost of the models and the paints, but if you stick to it and enjoy it, then it is well worth it.

I used to. Eldar exarchs were my favourite, though I enjoyed Terminator Assault squads (Dark Angels) as well - loved their back story.

    Re: Warhammer 40,000

When I was a nipper I was massively into Warhammer.. I seem to remember buying the original Rogue Trader book with a friend and painting those sprue-plastic Space Marines with enamel paints.. must've been around 1987, I should think..

As the Citadel paints became more generally available I ended-up making and painting loads of the things.. always Space Marines for me, the odd Landraider, Predator and Dreadnought thrown in along with a brief flirtation with Epic and Titans. Whenever I hear Will Smith's Summertime song my mind goes straight back to painting Ultramarines with one of my mates.

As I got a bit older and realised Games Workshop were bringing out new rules and models every 30 seconds as a licence to print money I became a bit disillusioned. Still I like to see the well-painted kits (some of the pro painters were stunning) and I bought Dawn of War 2 more out of nostalgia for my long-lost youth than anything else.. I think Forge World did a big Space Marine figure some years ago which I was almost tempted to buy... ahh.. the smell of Chaos Black, Skull White.....

    Re: Warhammer 40,000

    space wolves - 6000 points

imperial guard: mainly catachan - 7-8000 points

    warhammer dwarfs - 8000 points

warhammer chaos: nurgle - 8000 points

my sister has 2000 points of dark eldar and 1500 of dark elves.

*pictures later when my sisters home, so I can use her camera*
they have their own shelving unit, and theres currently a 8x4ft table around somewhere, wont be able to show you that, the house is a mess because of the builders

i have entered 2 tournaments, both of which i came last in, my tactics are terrible, squad choices are laughable - some kids a while back where laughing at me (quite loudly i might add) a few years back, when i fielded 3 squads of 5 ogres for my nurgle fight. they said "who in their right mind would want a army of ogres?". the manager then proudly announced that 'ogre kingdoms' was out later in the year. oh how we laughed at them

@pollaxe - they still make that big space marine. £93

    Re: Warhammer 40,000

It's strange to think just how much time I spent buying, painting and building these models, but then at the same time how much fun it was.

My step dad has been collecting pretty much since Games Workshop started and still paints today when he get's time.
Infact he has one of the oldest ork tanks/ buggies made, and put it together especially for a special tank only did Games Workshop did in Manchester a good few year's ago. He even got given a new Land Raider by the store manager I think it was, soley because he liked the model and hadnt seen one in years.

Shame there aren't more computer games based on the IP, DoW is great but I want more damn it!

Back to the OP, I went to a golden demon awards when I was younger and some of the entries (like every year) were amazing! I still look at them occasionally and wonder if I shouldn't get back in and give it a try.

Definitely! I've often thought some sort of decent simulator of the game would be great to play on the PC.. maybe in time..? Or maybe not...

God damn that's a lot of units/ money/ space and time!

I plan on having a nice wall mounted cabinet to house my models when I am finished. Would love to see some painted models of yours Stevie Lee. I remember the tank day, my brother got to control one of the HUGE units they custom built..and he was on the opposite team!

    Re: Warhammer 40,000

Like Pollaxe - I was really into the Space Marines around 86/87, used to race to my local model shop at that time of the month to pick up White Dwarf - a lot of it to look at the 'eavy Metal section with pro painted figs and dioramas. I recall buying my copy of the rules for 40k at the 'grand opening' of a London Games workshop store the same day I bought Johhny Hates Jazz from HMV Oxford St - B4 the t'internet it was the finest shop in my world!!!!!

Nostalgia got the better of me last year and I bought the 'Red' and 'Blue' games workshop catalogues which have phots of all the figures they had out in the late eighties - a real trip down memory lane. Unfortunatley on finding Girls and later pubs i cast aside all my many figures and white dwarfs and I think they went in the bin when we moved as kids......................

I even thought about buying some classic figs and paints, but like everything else I figured i'd end up sticking them in the cupboard
