To be fair, he's not the MI6 Chief and won't be for a while. Presumably his wife's facebook profile was mostly active when he was (and still is) an ambassador where it's as much about keeping a high profile and being in the "public eye". To me this is more a complete oversight of those responsible for the security checks when it had been decided to move him from ambassador to MI6 chief.
To be honest this should all have been thought about a while ago when the decision was made to use a public figure for the chief instead of an internal career officer.

One of the readers' comments on the times does make a good point about the fact that now we've seen all the photos, there's nothing to blackmail anyone with.
From the point of view of knowing who friends and family are, and where they live, I don't think it's hard hard to work it out if you actually want to... certainly not for counter-intelligence operatives anyway.

There are far more halfwit nutcases in the world than counter intelligence operatives. Stupidity like that means the halfwits also know the information. All it takes is one of the thousands of them being successfull in whatever nutty thing they want to do.

I don't think the blackmail issue is the main concern, its the fact that our money as tax payers is being paid to protect security/information in regard to the incoming head of Mi6, and this attention seeking prat of a wife is giving everyones address and whereabouts out for the world to see. How can Mi6 look out for the security of this country when it cant even keep its own house in order. Spose it makes a change to losing laptops, Mi6 have found another way to screw up.
I don't think these days any associations are too bothered about keeping stuff secret.
I mean for example, the US used to deny that the NSA even existed, and now you pop onto Wikipedia and you have the name of its chief, and it's a very similar situation with MI5 and MI6. Ultimately though, I think this probably means one of two things - either someone else is actually in charge of those organisations as opposed to the public "figureheads", designed to make it look like it's more open and transparent, or alternatively another secret organisation is actually doing the really important stuff leaving the entire MI6 and NSA organisations to act as a kind of shield.
