    Scooter License Query

Ok got a small question been googling with no help, i heard that there is a small car of sorts (possibly a 3 wheel thing) that can be drove on a scooter license due to small engine power, does anyone know what it is?

basically reason im asking is i want to drive but seriously cannot afford a car, a scooter/bike is a ideal solution but with alot of risk which this car wouldnt be quite as bad at.

    Any Ideas?

I remember BMW had a version a few years back. Maybe ask in some motor bike shops they may be able to help you out.

    Re: Scooter License Query

There's no such thing as a 'scooter licence'. You can get a moped licence, but almost nobody bothers, because all it entitles you to do is take off your L-Plates and carry a passenger on your moped, which is not something many people actually want to do.

Otherwise, you're looking at a motorcycle licence or a car licence. Various three wheelers (most famously the Reliant Robin, and more recently the Piaggio MP3 400) can be driven/ridden with either a car or a motorcycle licence.

If you don't have a licence at all, and want a three wheeler you can drive on a provisional licence, I think the Piaggio MP3 125 is probably your only option.

TBH, you can get a perfectly serviceable car for well under £500, so I'm not quite sure how a three wheeler is any more affordable.

Have you seen insurance costs for a new driver at 18? its ALOT, plus scooters dont each as much petrol, essentially its a balance between cost and safety plus i would like to take passengers so i do need a car i suppose.

Insurance for a car can be a brick wall to most young people (myself included) The way around it is too find a car that's around 7years old and nothing more than a 1.4 engine!! This will bring down the cost a lot!!! Also you could try the pass plus test if you have already passed you driving test, think you get some discount with some companies. My first car was a SEAT Toledo (1991 version i think) which I bought for £300 and then the insurance cost me £500. So cost for a car can be kept down.

Your best option is to ask at a local bike store. I knew the vehicle your on about but can't seem to find it, and not knowing that's its called does not help lol

It's not so much that as the fact you might stove it in to a Porsche or something.

    Re: Scooter License Query

I want a Porsche Carrera, I can only afford £5k. It's an outrage!

At the end of the day they're a business making money by gambling that you won't have an accident. Statistically young male drivers are the most likely to have an accident, hence the high prices.

It sucks, but if you want to drive, that's the price you pay. Is it £2k third party fire+theft? What about making it 3rd party only. Upping the excess to £1000?

Failing that get put on a parent's insurance (as long as it's their car).

I think it is third part fire and theft actually didnt think about that, is it a good idea not to get that cover though?

    Re: Scooter License Query

Chances are your excess will be quite high anyway (probably at least £250). Given that the car you're looking at is worth what £500?

Even if it does get nicked (which is unlikely as it'll probably not be targetted), you'll have to stump up the first £250 and your insurance premium will rocket the next year.

So on balance, 3rd party only is probably the way to go if it shaves a bit more money off the bill.

That is stupid!!! I agree with you insurance companies need to change their policy of tagging every young driver as some boy racer!!! I have been driving for 5 years and not one crash but do I get any reduction on insurance?? Hell no

Its annoying that a small proportion of young drivers make insurance so high for the rest of us!! Have you got any sister/brothers to share a car and insurance with??

You coudl also check how much it would be to do a multi car insurance (Admiral i think) Basically your parents have their car insured, and your car insured as the second car. Not sure how that really works but I know some friends who have done it that way.
