For goodness sake, class has nothing to do with this discussion. Grammar and spelling are not exactly reserved for the upper classes. Why bring class into the debate? I think that forums don't exactly need perfect English, but posts littered with several typing errors and exceptionally bad grammar and spelling are really annoying.

I don't think that's exactly what he was getting at, it was a pretty light-hearted post.

Maybe I should have put after those comments. As I sit with my nice filter coffee and my poor spelling and grammar at my desk and stare at my monitor.

I was not being serious. But some people here are very touchy.

I do not know why people get angry. I know enough times after checking my posts I have noticed I have not spelt something right or put the wrong word in a sentance. Every time I have felt

But never have I thought I would offend someone by it. If you choose you can simply ignore it

My apologies. I just have a bigger issue with people bringing class into things! I wouldn't say that personally grammar or spelling mistakes make me angry, I just tend to spot them and find it annoying. Also in regard to the R.I.P in peace thing, how about P.I.N number or A.T.M machine?

    ....
Erm, beg to differ. Bartering might be the exception not the rule, and it is certainly not the dominant system that it used to be before some banker invented money, but believe me, it's far from dead. One example .... my dentist fixes my dental problems and I fix his computer problems. He does my teeth out of business hours, and I do his computers out of business hours. A friend of mine has a similar arrangement with his car mechanic. Another example ...... someone I know grows a lot of veg, and so does a neighbour of his. They specialise in different things, and both end up with excesses. They have a neat little informal exchange system going, with an carrot/tomato exchange rate, and a cabbage/green beans rate, etc.

The advantages are clear. We each benefit from applying our skills and/or hobbies, and we don't pay tax on it.

Far from having ended, right now, I think you'll find there's a minor resurgence in this type of thing, and it wouldn't surprise me if it grew, with people more int4erested in grow-yer-own, allotments, etc. fuelled by pressures of the recession.

I wonder if Fallout can be blamed on that. The 'Barter' skill in that game allowed the player to haggle, didn't it?

As in the LETS system for example; good idea assuming you have the wherewithal etc, never been sure what I'd actually bring to my half. http://www.letslinkuk.net/index.htm

    Re: Grammar police.

I usually hate myself for making mistakes more than anyone else. I want to get it right. I don't usually point out others' mistakes since it usually ends up with being scrutinised and attacked myself.

I can understand the viewpoint of "ultimately does it really matter?" which is why I leave it simply as a personal bugbear. But there is a point in which grammar, spelling and use of text speak is so shredded and mashed together that the post has lost all meaning. I've seen so many posts where someone is asking a question (well assumed so since it contains a "?") but you've no idea what they're on about. In which case there really is no alternative but to "pull them up on it".

I think the thing I basically find the hardest to understand is why people don't want to improve their spelling and grammar. I certainly always want to improve mine and to better myself and my understanding, knowledge and abilities. Why would anyone be content and happy with being below average or mediocrity? Maybe in some things it wouldn't really matter but I personally think in communication it is quite important.

It may be a form of elitism but then what's wrong with that, surely better to strive to be in the "elite" rather than "dumb down" to the lowest common denominator.
