    Question Cellphone Radiation

Study Reveals How Much Cellphone Radiation You’re Getting
Researchers are divided on whether radiation from cellphones pose health risks or not. Now, one nonprofit organization adds some hard data to the argument: the radiation emission profiles of more than 1,200 cell phone models. The data won’t resolve the debate, but does give concrete information to consumers to help them make their buying decisions.

American cellphone radiation standards don’t make enough of an allowance for safety and ignore the impact of electromagnetic radiation on children, says the Environmental Working Group, which analyzed the radiation emissions from 1,268 cellphones. The group also looked at a number of recent research studies and supporting documentation from the handset makers to arrive at its conclusions.

“We think that based on current standards there’s increased risk of developing brain tumors in long term users — people who have used cellphones for more than 10 years — from radiation in cellphones,” says Olga Naidenko, a senior scientist at EWG, who worked on the report for about 10 months.
The radiation from cellphones doesn't particularly worry me that much anymore as I've weaned myself them now & rarely use it, but does it ever concern you? Or do you believe it's just a load of bumkum?

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

This has been an ongoing debate now for around 10 years, at first it was just the base stations now its moved onto the phones themselves. The radiation given off by handsets and the masts sits in the background, it wont send a geiger counter going crazy like a trip to Chernobyl!

Not forgetting that EU standards with things like this in most cases are higher than the rest of the world.

Isn't there something similar with PC's also, if the temperature of your processor gets excessively high due to fan failure it can give off microwaves.

All in all I dont think we have anything to really worry about, yeah all devices give off radiation as do base stations but they give off a background level which is there already.

Oid, did you do this subliminally knowing it was my day off today and knew I would bite?!

All that terrestial TV and radio 4, now they're killers. Don't get me started on sunshine and holidays in Cornwall.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

The problem is we don't know what effect it has on the children, oh won't someone think of the children.

When I was a child, about 13 I used a mobile phone extensively, often without a proper handsfree kit, I would trap it between my head and shoulder. Because of the size of the 90 minuite extended battery this caused some injury, as a bully at school once called me a pratt whilst i was talking on it. Whilst the original neck injury was minor, a few yaers later I started to find that when i moved my head in certain ways, it started to click a bit.

With the advent of WiFi this has only exacerbated the condition, andnow i find myself unable to move my head without my neck clicking. This makes me a sad panda.

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

I was hoping i could put my girlfriends mind at rest becuase she is always moaning about she thinks shes ill for being on the bloody phone too long.

Surely the sun does more damage in a day than a mobile will in years?

and also i dont belieave young children should be allowed a mobile phone i didnt have one or feel the need for one untill i won it in a arcade in devon when i was 13.

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

I've worked in GSM/UMTS R&D for >15 years; networks and cellphone businesses. Of course my opinion will be biased given that the business is financing 2 kids through Uni, but IMHO all this getting tumours from cell phones is complete and utter boo-locks. These scare stories have been around for long enough in the public eye that you'd have thought that by now, someone could have come up with concrete proof!

I'm always reminded of a newspaper story from Brum (or there abouts) regarding a neighbourhood having successfully fought against planning permission for a cell tower being built, based purely upon the number of cancer cases in the area and possible relationship to cell phones. There was a picture of a couple of the key families in the paper... all lined up Walton style in front of their home smiling for the camera in light of their victory.... and in the backdrop a huge national grid electricity pylon!

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

I remember a similar story quite a few years back where local inhabitants pulled the cell tower down because they didnt like the way it looked and they were worried about cancer. Granted it was a small village somewhere and it was very rural. Sometimes the sites can be a bit of an eyesore but look at TV transmitters and also like mentioned the energy grid pylons.

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

I remember one of my favorite lecturers at uni telling me about the school his children went too.

They where offered some good money to put a mast at the top end of the playing feilds, a fair distance from the class rooms.

The PTA did a rabble rabble type roundup of the league of un-informed voters to protest against this. He pointed out to the mothers that it was a sunny day with no cloud, how many of them had hats/suncream on their children as they where out in the mid day sun.

The problem with stuff like this where we don't really know, is we had to side on a balance of probabilities, we can't see any real evidence of it happening quickly, but there are plenty of other externals which we can (like the sun). Fear shouldn't ever blind us from that, or stop us enriching our lifes.

That said, I often hold the phone away from my head when its dialing, the power ramp up at first is immense, and the touch HD kindly vibrates once its connected.

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

Mobile phones are 2-way trasnmitter devices, not just receiving the signal from the mast, but sending it back out (d'oh), so you're actually getting more "radiation" from the phone than from the mast.

Add this to the fact that phones ramp up their output power the further away from the mast they happen to be, and you are safer NEARER the mast than further away.

Proof? Watch your battery go flat quickly in a low signal area.

Now try to explain that to an anti-phone mast campaigner....
... but look at the masts! Think of the children!

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

The only problem with radiation from mobiles is that quite alot of the time they are kept in your pocket, so quite alot of the time it is your danglies nether-regions that are getting the zapping, which could explain the increasing amount of infertility.

Or maybe just the fact that people are getting fatter and fatter leading to health issues and want to blame their problems on a little gadget because it makes them feel better about themselves...

    Re: Cellphone Radiation

Well, even if the news is true, what about all the other harmful rays floating around the place!! Plus, if you were on the tube and a lot of people were using thier mobiles at the same time what chance is there of you being affected by the radiation from thier phones?!
