Should retailers extra charges be opt in?

E.g. if there is a special warranty is it right for the retailer to add this on and expect you to notice and say no or should the option be there for you to take if you require?

Re: Should retailers extra charges be opt in?

Your talking about SCAN. In all fairness this has been covered countless times and the same result/ answer given. It isnt going to change.

I think it is advertised enough and isn't that hard to spot either.

Saying that though, I think Opt in is a better idea and would stop the same question being repeatedly asked and covered over and over.

Re: Should retailers extra charges be opt in?

The EU has recently said that these extra charges should be opt-in only and plan on putting legislation through to ensure this is the case.

It is annoying when you accidently buy it though, twice I've almost bought it - it doesnt seem to remember my choice.

Re: Should retailers extra charges be opt in?

OMG this again :\ I find it fairly easy to opt out after picking no then conforming my option.

Note to Scan, apparently its challenging to at least notice the opt-out option and then select it. Maybe you should contact Mensa about getting the Scansure opt in/out put into an IQ test of theirs.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

No retailer was stipulated. Scan aren't the only ones to do this, even if it does also apply to them.

And, IMHO, no, it isn't right for retailers to be able to add things to a customer's shopping basket that they then get to pay for unless they notice and take it out, REGARDLESS of how well advertised it is.

And that isn't a pop at Scan. It's a pop at ANYONE doing this ... like RyanAir, for instance, who (IIRC) have just decided to make baggage charges an optional extra and then, add it as default.

The EU has already banned this practice is relation to opt-out insurance on flights, and look to be going to widen the scope of that. And it can't come soon enough, in my view. It's actually something the EU might be useful for.

Ask them to change it, if they don't, just shop elsewhere. Easy.

I agree, I will just shop elsewhere. I think its wrong that a basket should have an item selected that I have not picked. Imagine walking around tesco and staff putting things in your trolly!

I've almost been caught twice, as sometimes when you are in a rush your mind tends to skim read the page and you don't always see the opt out option.

Imo I dislike it, and it I agree with the general sentiment here it should be an opt in.

but then you would be aware it was going in so there would be no issue right? (as you could remove it)

Thats what this thread is about if I am not correct http://forums.hexus.net/scan-care-he...ure-again.html

Yet it has been removed on pevious orders so the customer was aware of Scansure.

Re: Should retailers extra charges be opt in?

Doesn't this work both ways? What if lets say i purchased a £400+ processor and forgot to opt in then i accidently blew it up installing it. What happens then apart from my head exploding with anger. In fact I'm pretty sure i remember those guys who did the overclocking guide at the last SCAN performance day saying your covered even if you overclock it and blow it up. Personally i think its an excellent idea Opt in? Opt out? so long as I'm covered who gives a toss? i really cant see what all the yahoo's about.
