    bit of an eco-eye opener.

with the ever-growing power crisis and rising power costs we all need to start seriously thinking about how we can start to save energy.
i watched this program on the BBC just before and i was shocked by the effort all those bikers had to put in just to power a house for a day.

you can find the program here.

the program's all about powering a home on ~80 bikers with absolutely no other means of supply (completely disconnected from the grid).
it is a total eye opener when you see the sweat pouring off them.
but the biggest thing that i've learnt from watching that program is the fact that "everyday" things like hoovering, cooking, washing etc. are all huge energy hogs whereas i've always thought of computers and TVs and stuff as the only real energy hogs.

it's definitely a good watch and i hope you enjoy it

Re: bit of an eco-eye opener.

Yeah I watched this too and I thought it was a really good program. Although I already knew that kettles and electric showers (and anything with an electrical heating element) are huge energy hogs it still managed to open my eyes to the extent of power use and wastage. Now I can't bear to leave my TV on stand-by anymore because all I see are those poor people huffing and puffing away if I do. Definitely worth a watch

I was there btw. Barely any police, it was nearly entirely rent-a-cops. Is that the way modern policing is going? They didn't even know who's rules they were enforcing/who's paying when asked.

The 6th picture in that second link is a girl who went to the same school as me! We're not great friends or anything but we all congratulated her on her rise to fame

In general anything electro-mechanical or thermo-electric, i.e. motors, pumps, heating elements and cooling systems, are going to be far more power hungry and far less efficient than purely electrical devices.

I'm glad that the pc doesn't use as much energy as most things seeing as the pc is the "thing" I use the most

I don't know about that, yesterday I downloaded Prime95 and 3DMark and used my desktop as a heating element
