Well, I for one am not at all surprised to be honest. Hardrives are based on magnetism and water doesn't affect magnets! No doubt the biggest issue would be corrosion of the components, but as the platters are glass all you need to do is remove the platters, and put them into your funky data recovery machine or whatever and away you go.

My two deathstars are still in working order, one of them has had a "whiney spindle"* since about 2003, but neither of them have any problems apart form that. I've got them in external caddies with data on that I don't want99% recovered.

All drives contain data when shipped - even if it only formatting or bad sector mapping datascan sending out drives containing data are they?

It didn't fall off, it merely became insufficient at it's purpose and got a bit droopy...
If the pictures are the actual hard drive in question, then I seriously doubt 99% of the data is salvageable.
Sounds more like an advert for Ontrack to me. "Look, we can do this! It would be piss easy to discover the kiddy porn on your ex husband's laptop, even after it was hurled through your window. On fire".
