    Graduate Jobs-Engineering

I am in my final year on an Automotive Engineering course, and am expecting to pass with 2:1 (Hons). I have been searching high and low for graduates jobs but im starting to run out of ideas. I am desperate to find a job after university, as being a father & with my parents living abroad if i don't find a job i'm going to be in a bit of a sticky situation.

    So far I have applied for;
    Transport for London
    BAE
MOD graduate jobs (rejected, due to online SHL test )
    Atkins Engineering
    Jaguar/Land Rover
    BOC gases

and also e-mailed Volvo (all divisions), Corus, Cummings, Cosworth, Ricardo but am yet to hear back.

I know its a short in the dark, but can anyone suggest any engineering based companies in the UK that I could apply for in a graduate area? Any paid engineering work at all.

    Many thanks guys.

Have you considered applying for unpaid engineering work as well? You might be better off in the long run.

    Re: Graduate Jobs-Engineering

Are there any trade magazines you can look in the jobs section for graduate schemes? It's a bad time to apply for jobs at the moment, but the situation will improve in the future.

I'd consider something like the Rolls-Royce Graduate training scheme:
    http://www.rolls-royce.com/careers/graduate_progs/

    Re: Graduate Jobs-Engineering

Sorry should have added, I have used just about every job finder website out there & applied for all I can find! Rolls Royce want Maths and/or Physics at A level and I don't have them unfortunately - i was complacent and my a levels went a bit pear shaped as a result.

I've not thought of unpaid work, but wouldn't know where to start with that. - Just asking companies if they are interested? Im also wary about the financial side of things, in terms of finding accommodation for myself and what happens with gf & daughter.

Thanks for the responses though guys.

    Re: Graduate Jobs-Engineering

Interest rates are low - get a loan, invest in your future and get some experience and you'll more than pay yourself back. Also look for part time work to take the edge off it.

I had no idea you could even do an engineering course without Maths/Physics A level - if you want to stay in the field then I'd recommend enrolling at your local college and getting them ASAP. Shouldn't be a problem if you're heading for an engineering 2:1.

EDIT: or you could do them remotely via the NEC (http://www.nec.ac.uk/info/?usca_p=t) - kinda like open university but for GCE.

Iv got them both at AS level, but had to do a foundation year in engineering before I started my full time Engineering course. The foundation course is the equivalent of 260 UCAS points. Im going to apply for the Rolls Royce program anyway, iv got a lot of good stuff in my CV & to use on application forms so hopefully they wont put too much weight into the A levels if I've made up for it in other areas.

Before I got into IT, I just called every IT services company I could get the details for. I used everyone I knew with any sort of link to any IT company to get in the door. I also sent letters as well as emails. Letters tend to get taken a LOT more seriously than emails in my experience. I always followed up a letter or an email with a phone call as well.
Looking for a job for me was a full time job, particualrily in the last IT recession but perserverence always pays off and it looks like hiring's finally starting to rise in this country so hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I can say "I feel your pain", although I only *technically* graduated August last year - and still have yet to get my first 'proper' job. Been doing freelance work for several years now, but would like a change though.

Got a phone interview tomorrow though, so wish me luck

    Re: Graduate Jobs-Engineering

I work for Renishaw Plc who are currently employing. I'm not sure what the careers section of their website says atm, but I got a job there by just sending in my CV and being tenacious.

Renishaw are not automotive engineering, but more precision engineering. They are an international company and world leaders in their field. Not a bad company to work for.
