    Sold something on ebay

Iv not had the best of luck with ebay recently so want to just double check with you guys. I just sold a NAS box on ebay for £65 to someone with only 1 feedback (positive).

If i post it to him, and he pays via paypal, am I at risk of loosing the box & not getting paid if he reverses the payment? How does this work/what is there to protect me from it? Its only recently I have started to use ebay properly and this is only the second thing I have sold, so don't want to risk anything.

    thanks

    Re: Sold something on ebay

Don't know if there is anyway to stop him actually reversing payment (i.e you can provide proof later to get it back ofc), i generally only sell to people with decent feedback that are UK based to minimize issues.

Everytime i sell something or my balance tops £100 i buy something right away, and don't register my bank account as the process to register your account creates a direct debit, (i also might not be 100% but i believe in the terms it gives them access to withdraw fee's from your account then when someone does a reverse on the payment), this way i minimize the chances even more of having cash taken from both the paypal and bank account. (or at least thats how i gather it works).

Don't know if this will be helpful!

    Re: Sold something on ebay

Sent the item by Special Delivery as it is a guaranteed service and the item is worth over £30.
Take pictures of the item before you pack it and if you can record a video of it running then even better. I would also take some packing pictures of the item when you pack it and of course take pictures of the package.

This way you can prove you properly packed the item, that it was working and that the item was received by the buyer. Also add the tracking info to the paypal transaction.

Also inform the buyer when you send the item too.

AFAIK, a copy of the signature should also be scanned by Royal Mail.

    Re: Sold something on ebay

Unless he sent the money via e-cheque the money is in your account and can't be reversed (if it's an echeque it will be listed as "Processing, due 27th Jan" or something similar in the details column on your paypal home page.

As other's have said, send recorded/delivery just in case he's a "it never arrived" merchant...

Probably a bit late, but don't send it until you have received payment!

For future reference, change your account conditions to require all your buyers to have a minimum of 10 feedback points and insist on payment by Paypal. That gives you the best protection.

That's not true, the money can very easily be reversed.

Make sure you send it via a trackable method that works with Paypal - check their terms and conditions to make sure that whatever you do complies with their Seller Protction policy. It'll be pricey, but rather that than lose the money.

I think what he meant was, the buyer cannot go into his paypal and reverse the funds himself, not without first lodging a dispute and it going in his favour. Only paypal, afaik, can reverse transactions like that.

your 2nd point is spot on.... I insisted on recorded methods of delivery every time, 1st class recorded for items <£30 value, Special delivery for those £30>£500, toe rags have a choice, sign for it or don't get it

I've had the first one done to me by a scammer, so it can definitely happen. Don't know how, but it did.

I told him when I would post it, i.e. Wednesday morning so at 1pm on Wednesday he reversed the payment. Thankfully I'd been late so I just didn't bother shipping it - and I had to start a dispute with eBay myself.

the only way I could see it happening is if both the primary and secondary funding source were invalid, for example insufficient funds in the account to clear a direct transfer payment (from buyer>seller) and then the backup debit/credit card had expired/insufficient funds on that too.

It's very unlikely, but I'd missed that one

Don't know, it was extremely convenient timing if that was the case.

Actually, thinking back, I have a vague feeling that he disputed the payment with Paypal, rather than disputing the auction with eBay, saying that it hadn't arrived. I remember thinking it was ridiculous - how could you accuse someone of not posting an item 3 days after an auction finished?

Nonetheless, I was shocked at how easy it was to do - and disgusted at how quickly Paypal seemed to side with the buyer. He had 2 feedback, I had over 100 with many, many sales. But there you go.

It's such a pity they have a monopoly for a casual seller wanting to clear his stuff out.

I best not continue I could rant about them for ages.
