    Scam or no scam?

    Hey guys... quick question

Today I received in my junk email one from

    HMRC United Kingdom (tax-refund@hmrc.gov.uk)

notifying me of eligibility for tax refund for £xx, along with an attached form to fill out.

I'm wary of filling it out mainly because it came to my junk email folder, although the address seems legit to me.. the form asks for name, address, phone number, mother's maiden name, bank details (including a secure password I use for online transactions). The HMRC logo is also in both the email and the form, but I can't help but wonder..

Any advice or info would be appreciated

    yes it's a scam.

If i remember right, the attachment is an exe, not a form at all.

And why would they need that then? Oh yes, it's because they are trying to scam you.

Bank details including a password? It's gotta be fake.

Take a look at the headers of the email and you'll be able to see if the from address was forged.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

Definitely a scam. The English grammar is awful as usual. Report it to hmrc phishing people.

    Bit surprised you've asked tbh

The title of this thread sounds like the name of some game-show inspired by the financial crisis.

Your right - the televised name is going to be 'General Election' however, around 4 month from now..
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

LoL?! Are you being serious JK Ferret or are you just having a laugh with HEXUS?

If you are being serious, then follow the advice previously stated by other posters. If ya having a laugh then I'm sure someone here can find amusing stuff that you can write back with and amuse yourself with the scammers.

    Re: Scam or no scam?

Can't believe so called experienced computer folk are even questioning this.

If you don't recognise who sent it - delete it it. Simple.

If it's for real, they will contact you.

Nothing is for nothing and there are an awful lot of not very nice people out there.

No compromise. Use mailwasher freebie - free for one e-mail account anyway, after that they want money.

    But it's nice to bounce

How do you think the gov get your email?

They have your NI number, tax code, address and POSSIBLY a phone number
Unless you file a tax return online I doubt they ever send emails to the public

    Re: Scam or no scam?

Quite funny you think that HMRC would contact you first for a tax refund. In my experience they're quite happy to keep hold of it until you ask them...

If you actually want to claim a tax refund, you simply send them a form and they'll check your eligibility.

I pretty much had to ring them up and wait for a few months, a cheque came through the post.. no bank details needed.. (they have that already, LOL)
