Hollywood: Please stop destroying good material!

...and so I've heard today it is still going strong, a 2011 Hollywood live action version of Ghost in the Shell.

    It's going to be terrible.

    Some info here.

I've also read that it's going to be "full of action" and "not the pretentious pseudo-philosohpical technobabble of the film"...erm...pardon? That's what made the 1995 film good which in turned spawned 2 really good series.

So quite possibly as one site wrote: "Expect plenty of pitched gun battles in the dark futuristic streets of Neo-New York as aliens tear the city apart in pursuit of the Crystal."

and OH NO!!!! Whilst researching Ghost in the Shell Hollywood hash...I found THIS!!!

Butchering Akira, setting it in Manhatten...I don't think there is a facepalm big enough for all this.

    Hmmm.......

So in essence they're just using the name, can't see this being any good. Although, GitS 2 did get slightly too philosophical for me. Enjoyed GitS SAC though.

Re: Hollywood: Please stop destroying good material!

You only need to look how they screwed up the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still to realised they could easily do the same with other material!!

The whole point of the movie was not the action!! It is meant to be set in Japan!!

This sounds like the Italian Job remake which is not set in Italy!!

    Indeed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3tF7TL0Qh4

I am of the, perhaps minority, who greatly enjoy Asian entertainment and thinks that remakes need not be bad even if they come from Hollywood. Unfortunately, they are more often than not

But I am hopeful, I may as well be if they've already decided to do it. I felt they did a pretty good job with The Ring and The Grudge (though if I remember right, they butchered the sequels). From the very short interview, the lady seem to know a bit about the background of the series which is a start.

they should take a large group of characters from different anime and have them save the universe together.

    STREET FIGHTER!
the Anima Movie and Alpha were amazing but:

Bison for a start, brittle old man missing his fester - enough said!

Iim in total agreement - Ghost in the Shell is amazing, for the holywood live action think tank to get their grubby little mits on this and script it with crayon as is their custom would be simply shambolic!

Re: Hollywood: Please stop destroying good material!

Not to mention they are now going through and destroying the A-Team.... The trailer looks utter crap and I really do hope this will flop.

This is the problem with Hollywood in general though, crap rehashes of classic movies or remakes of remakes and under par sequels that aren't worth the film they are printed on. Over the last few years I think I have seen around 3 movies that I actually thought were worth paying to see.

Three words: Edge Of Darkness. Enough to make me want to see Gibson on the wrong end of the body disposal method in Fargo.

LOL yeah man, I hear a lot of people slagging him for this movie. Brothers is the same, utter toss.

Fingers crossed Hurt Locker is alright as I missed it first time around so the Tyneside Cinema are showing it again tonight and tomorrow so going to see what it's like.

The funny thing is, they want the sales from the box office but I tend to wait till they are available to rent and then take up Blockbusters offer of 4 new releases for 4 nights for a tenner. Costs anything from £8 - 17 round here for a ticket to see a movie (£17 being the new iMax at the Metro Centre) So for a tenner I can get 4 new movies and still save my money. If it's crap then in essence I wasted £2.50 per movie and not £8+.

True, saw the trailer at the cinema last week.

I think Gibson is getting a bit past it to be making action movies.

On the plus side, the inevitable sacrilege of the Ghost in the Shell name is likely to drive interest in watching the original, which can only be a good thing.

    EDIT: Woo! 1,000 posts.

Indeed they have. I think this year alone the only two movies that have my attention are Iron Man 2 (Iron Man fan from an early age) and 4 Lions which doesn't even have a publishing deal as yet xD
