    Genealogy sites with forums

    Lo people

I've started a quick track back on some family members, but while there are plenty of chargeable sites out there (clearly good money in that sector) I was hoping for forums, similar to these, on the subjects.

But some don't appear to have any community at all, and some do, but it's part of the monthly charge for the access to the data in the first place.

So... do you guys know of any good community's for Genealogy?

    Fankoooooo

You could always pop along to your local Mormon temple - they've very big on genealogy

    Re: Genealogy sites with forums

Actually, that was a semi-serious comment: Mormons *are* very big on geneaogy so one possible source of data might be to see if there are any mormon centres / communities in your local area that you could approach for assistance. I'm sure they'd be happy to assist if you were happy to listen to their spiel occasionally.

I've never quite figured out why genealogy always seems to be a charged service. I suppose it could be to do with the large amounts of personally identifiable data held - running one of those databases must be a Data Protection nightmare...

    Think my dearest mother uses
    http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/default.aspx

    or the paid for

    http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

both have forums / community style things

the parts that are charged usually involve access to extra info, but stuff generated by members tends to be free.

    ancestry needs a subscription....

Genes was a free sign up.. then I got to the Reply section to a section that interested me... filled it all in... with links to help the lass who asked a question.. and then got asked for £9.99 for 6 months membership to join in.

tsk... not free at all !

    Re: Genealogy sites with forums

try http://www.rootschat.com/forum/ for a forum; free, and members (possibly with subscriptions themselves to other sites) will also look things up for you if you ask.

ancestry and the other paid sites sometimes do have free trials which can be enough for you to find what you're after. eg findmypast have a free 14 day trial (just remember to cancel before the sub kicks in..) http://www.findmypast.co.uk/home.jsp; not sure if they have a forum.

free bmd & their affiliated sites for census records etc are good, http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl check the coverage charts to see if the period you're after has been transcribed.
