Re: White stick and a Pooch in a coat please...

I have 20/20 vision and have not needed glasses since I was around 12-13 when I was tested and found to be long sighted.

My hearing on the other hand is getting progressively worse and I'm going to get a hearing test done soon as I feel that I've damaged my hearing by working in noisy environments in the past.

Re: White stick and a Pooch in a coat please...

Had mine tested 2 days ago.. -2.25 and -2.75 (plus some cyl/axis numbers on left), and also -0.50 and -1.00 for near vision. Have only ever worn glasses for tv, never out of doors etc - slightly fuzzy is good enough for most things (I don't drive).
Never needed reading glasses, used to have really good vision for close work but that's not the case anymore and so some things are a bit either/or, ie for looking at PC screen neither glasses on or off seems quite right.

Aye - I had one last weekend. Blank spots are the warning.
Any other possible triggers ? Mine are stress related. The more stressed I get the more migraines I get.

I'm being tested next Thursday as part of my aviation medical renewal; worrying now that the PC use will have messed them up since last medical! Getting my hearing tested too, joy...

Re: White stick and a Pooch in a coat please...

My last eye test I had I was -0.25 in my right eye and -0.05 in the left eye but yet I suffer from a little short sightedness according to the optician. At times I can finish work and it will take a good 30 mins for my eyes to readjust to seeing objects 30+ yards away clearly.

Might also be a trigger (I'm deciding whether to sell/buy a house at the moment)... Dehydration is my normal one... Very rarely get them if my eyes are ok though.

Do you get the numb/fizzy nose and flashing lights too??!

It's a bit more than slightly really, but if I walk round outdoors with specs on I feel weird so I put up with not seeing anything clearly (if I don't recognise someone I know across the street & walk past, well that's just a bonus )

Recently I've had some mild 'ocular migraine' things, according to optician's diagnosis - visual disturbance without headache - she mentioned dehydration too, so will be bearing that in mind.

Tig - you do realise that while viewing this thread the taskbar icon says

'White stick and a poo...' so it looks like 'White stick and a poo in a coat please..'

I can't get that out of my head when I see the thread now!

Re: White stick and a Pooch in a coat please...

I'm a migraine sufferer too and Migraleves are the only pills that help me. I can't take the Triptan family, unfortunately (I tried Immigran once and thought my head was going to explode) nor beta blockers.

I'm 100% vision (they don't say 20/20 any more, apparently) though I'm told I'm slightly long-sighted in my right eye and will need glasses for reading any time from the next six months to ten years! I know this because I got my eyes checked recently (for the first time.)

The optician chap was excellent and we had a long chat about migraine (blurred vision is an increasing after-effect of an attack for me as I get older) and screen work. He said that using a screen does not make your eyesight deteriorate at all it's just that if you do work with a screen all day then you'll notice any deterioration of vision far quicker than you will, say, digging a ditch for a living. Similarly, the blurred vision is a symptom of the migraine rather than a cause or trigger (which is what I was worried about.) His wife also suffers from bad migraines so I had a very sympathetic audience from him.

Dehydration is one of the main triggers for me too. My warning signs are flashing lights in my vision (all over) then either the back of my skull tightens or it feels like someone's driving a nail through an eye and into my teeth. I get very badly blurred vision for anything from an hour to several hours after an attack now which really annoys me.

    Still, mustn't grumble!

I get the flashing blank spots, and sometimes that numb fizziness across the back of my head and neck, followed by the pain. It was much worse when I was younger. I used to get the full on photophobia, raging fever, and vomiting. Now I get the vision effects, followed by the pain and some nausea only.
If I take aspirin as soon as I notice the holes in my vision, then I can sometimes can get no more than your normal headache ! Interestingly, I also get a hangover, where sharp movements or bending down are not recommended, and immediately after an attack I'm ravenously hungry.

EDit: I have no idea what my eyesight is like officially, but I don't have long-arm syndrome or any sort of glasses.

My grandfather used to say there were 3 types of people who needed to wear glasses, those for reading those for distance work and tho who needed them to see! I am like him and need them to see they are the firt thing I put on and last thing I take off...., fortunately (I guess) my eyes have not changed much in the last 10 years, -3.25, -3.75 I think. However I am starting to nice floating bits....

Had my eyes tested about a fortnight ago, 20/20 still, but I'm only 18.

Man and dad both glasses free though, so hopefully I can enjoy decent vision throughout my life .

Do you wear glasses or contacts Tig?
