    Too Technical?!

So I applied for a new job. Got interviewed, then a second interview, then a third. Was told basically that I had the job, just the company owner had to approve my hiring.

I was rung today to tell me that the owner of the company flat refused my application because I come from "too high a technical employment record" (I used to work for Nortel Networks and currently for an optical switch manufacturer) and that Id be "too technical" to do IT support for a small company.

I did seven years IT support for a small company.. that was my first job after leaving school! .. the MD and FD who interviewed me and despite their insistances .. the owners decreed no.

Im stunned, so are the MD and FD.. they couldn't apologise enough

I so needed and wanted this job

Ive spent £220 on new suits (I dont have to wear them at my current job, so needed new), £200 on travel which they wont reimburse. (money which I dont have).

Let that be a warning to anyone who wants a job in IT, don't be too good huh?

    It's just so wrong.

Your kidding! Maybe it was something to do with wages? If you have a good background and good experience, then they must of expected you to demand high wages...

Truly wrong.... good luck finding another job, can't imagine life being jobless (TOUCH WOOD).

I was pitching myself at the salary they were offering on their application. It was just down to the owner feeling that I came from the wrong job background (telecommunications & fiber optics)

Im not jobless thankfully, I have contract work at my old employer (they are still bargaining with me to stay and come back permanent).. but still, this sucks.

This isn't uncommon. Overqualified/experienced is something companies don't want.

You can't have efficient IT engineers tht solve IT problems.

That would just be bad business practice surely?

Been there, felt this whole over qualified thing. The best one I saw was the 'it manager' who did not know where the control panel was. Turns out the guy was hired cos his Uncle owned the company.

A common issue with small firms is the do not want to take on someone overqualified as they consider you to be a high turnover risk....

Sorry to hear of your problems tho mate.
