I was told (when I had to get one to provide medical evidence to my uni as to why I missed a uni and deserve compensated marks as a result) by my local GPs it depends on the letter required, and if there is a charge it is because of the reasons for the letter (IIRC an employer letter was free but it was about 3 months ago)

I think the other reason was to discourage the workshy from trying to get free time off work

Mine was a retrospective note, funnily enough he wouldn't write me one before my operation.....

Just in case you didn't turn up...? Seems a little odd if they knew you were having an operation and were going to be incapable of work / study / whatever for a lengthy recovery period that they wouldn't write a note confirming that...

Apparently they couldn't write one in case I didn't attend the operation

Re: Why Do Some Doctors Charge You For Medical Letters

Cost me £30 for a CAA self diagnosis which had to be signed by my GP. That involved a cursory glance at my medical history to make sure that I didn't have any vague disorders that meant I was unfit to fly (it's roughly DVLA standard).

I had a sick note for an exam once (GCSEs) which was free. Still got an A in the exam

My Class 2 Aviation medical wasn't much more than that! Grab one, and you can fly to Europe too

Of course, generally anything with the CAA involves them bending you over and giving your wallet a good shafting Useless bastards...
