    Top Gear laps..

Just saw Tom Cruise do a 1:44.2 arond the top gear track and so he went top of the celeb charts.

I then began to think, how quick is Mr Cruise compared to the great F1 drivers and the stig...

so i went onto the wikipedia site, and i was amazed to find he was even quicker than Rubens Barrichello who did it in a 1:44.3 and the stig who only managed it in a 1:44.4.

My question is how can a celeb who has just come to a track beat a professional driver like Rubens and even the stig who must have done hundreds, maybe thousands of laps round the circuit?

Did anyone else find the whole slot embarrassing tonight? Getting Clarkson to squirm to Hollywood celebs plugging their latest film who couldn't give a sod about the whole show is just dull. Most of the interview content has been just cringe-inducing padding for the last two weeks.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the BBC promised to be a little generous with the timekeeping to secure the booking. It's far too convenient to have two people come in who have probably never driven a manual car let alone a right hand drive and suddenly blast the rest of the leaderboard out of the water.

According to Clarkson in his InGear article in The Sunday Times, Tom Cruise set a lap in the morning when it was wet but later asked if he could have another go when it had dried up.

Also, Diaz and Cruise on top of the lap board? Their laps looked crap...

And the Veyron equally... that was never the fastest lap ever. It looked horrible in the corners, and not horrible as in on a knife-edge, it was just slow.

Lots of ass-licking and bowing to demands methinks.

    Still, Senna! Weeeee!
Senna section was just so , even if we have seen it all before. Could only be topped by them playing his entire Monaco qualifying lap from 1989

    Re: Top Gear laps..

Yeah - have to say I thought the times for the celeb laps were BS particularly as both of them were stirring the gear box at points (and IIRC one of them was bouncing off the the limiter at one point too). But then Top Gear is scripted / made up anyway - I thought the same about the dakar vs snow mobile race... Nice camera work and nice to look at but it looked very much like lots of different sections (set pieces) stitched together after the fact and nothing like a race.

Really don't understand the negativity towards Top Gear. As much as i loath Tom Cruise. I found the episode great and enjoyable. Finishing with a great tribute to a legend too.

Really impressed with this series so far.

Last weekends episode was one of the worst hours of television I've seen this year. And that includes the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Was refreshingly staggered at the section on Senna this week though. It was so out of keeping with the trend of going more and more contrived with as much scripted stupidity you can squeeze into a hour as possible.

    Re: Top Gear laps..

Wasn't quite sure how Diaz got such a good time as she had a more trouble with gear changes (and my word how much does she swear!). Cruise was really pushing it and flies planes so not overly surprising to be at the top. Maybe just combined the best clips of various laps with the best time from all laps to make the best tv? The length of the advert/trailer for the film was pretty shameless though!

Nice one - that footage appears to have been completely removed from youtube, still one of my favorite in car sequences, best ten minutes of Top Gear ever in my opinion, I'd far rather watch stuff like that than the laughably scripted cocking about rubbish they seem to specialise in these days.

The Senna bit is what top gear should be like, just like last years final section about the death of the supercar.
