Off because of extreme weather conditions

I couldn't make it into work today because there was no public transport then I got told a while later that the office is shut. Took me 8 hours to get home from work where normally it would take me about 40 minutes.

    I stay in sunny Scotland.

Extreme conditions ftw or ftl depending which side of management you are on.

Re: Off because of extreme weather conditions

Isn't this ''extreme'' weather...just your standard UK winter (as has been for the last couple of years IIRC)? Snow in Scotland is hardly taking my breath away!

8 hour journey sounds like fun though!

It's not "extreme weather" it's fairly typical weather that doesn't happen often enough for us to justify the costs of dealing with it.

Re: Off because of extreme weather conditions

For Scotland this is extreme weather. Being in Edinburgh I've never seen snow like this and its not even thawing yet 2 weeks into this.
Catagory 1 roads are cleared, but yesterday from 9am a blizzard hit when it was rush hour causing no end of chaos. Edinburgh's buses were all taken off the roads and the trains are still on restricted timetables.

The laugh is that 2 weeks ago as this all started there was all this praise that we were ready for this as 48,000 tonnes of Peruvian rocksalt was being offloaded in Leith Docks. I don't think its much use to us now as the temperatures tonight are dropping to -15 which makes this sort of stuff in-effective.

Re: Off because of extreme weather conditions

Just want to clarify that I don't disagree when my manager classes it as extreme weather & suggests I don't come in. In that case it is highly extreme weather & not too be taken lightly.

Re: Off because of extreme weather conditions

Did anyone see that reporter in Eastern Siberia where the temp is something like -40 or -50? He had a beaker of hot water which he threw into the air - it instantly 'vapourised' (the water, not the beaker smartass but it's the wrong word anyway) and turned into snow . Now that is cold.

Difference is they expect very cold sub zero temperatures annualy.

It has only been the past couple of years we have had cold winters/any real snow.

I knew a lady from Siberia at my old work. She said it felt colder here than it did in Siberia, strangely enough.
