Paypal & their dispute system :(

I bought a motherboard off ebay, when it arrived it didn't work. i tried everything I could think of but nothing worked with it. I contacted the seller in regards to it and after numerous emails he refused to accept a return of it for checking/ a refund.

I set up a dispute in paypal, confident I would get my money back for it. I submitted my case, he submitted a hastily written rebuke.

Paypal then requested the tracking information off of me to prove the item arrived. The problem was the sender had posted it out 1st class STANDARD delivery, so there was no tracking information.

I explained this to Paypal, telling them to check the original sale as it very clearly said ''1st class STANDARD delivery service'' in 2 separate locations.

I now hear back that due to the fact i did not provide valid tracking information I have lost the dispute. . How is this sort of thing normally handled? 1st class & 2nd class parcels carry no tracking information so I cant have been the only one caught up in this? Had I just claimed the parcel never turned up I would have got my money back as the seller could not prove delivery.

I am really hacked off with it, just out of principle. Lesson learn't i guess. Luckily it was only £30 and not more!

That's ridiculous. Why should you have to prove that you received the item?

Re: Paypal & their dispute system :(

presumably becuase he could buy an item he already has that broken and replace it with a working one - theres more to the dispute system than meets the eye, unfortunately you have to lower yourself to the scum of the earth level of deception when dealing with Paypal, some people don't give a crap - they see PayPal as a money maker and not illegal for some reason.

For me, like you say claiming it never turned up would have been the better way to go, although that would then make you lying - its catch 22, but where paypal is concerned the legally abiding party is very usually the ones who suffer.

Proving it arrived doesn't prevent that though?

Re: Paypal & their dispute system :(

I had a similar problem to you the goods were clearly not as described and ebay / paypal were completely useless refusing at any point in helping me...

I resorted to getting my credit card company involved and then almost taking the guy to court...

With Paypal it has to be black and white and squeaky clean. There is no middle ground with them at all. I avoid using Paypal at all costs these days.

Re: Paypal & their dispute system :(

Thats the thing, surely this is as clean cut as it comes!?

I received the motherboard, i send the an e-mail stating it doesn't work, him replying....repeat several times with me trying everything he suggest over a period of week. He then blames me saying I must have damaged it and flat out refuses to accept a return. I politely tell him I work in a Global Radio Communications & Defence company, specializing in Electronic weapons & countermeasures... and that this motherboard is for a touch screen in car computer I am putting together. trying to emphasis the fact I am not a window licking 12 year old. I then set up a paypal dispute when I don't hear back from him.

The annoying thing is....paypal sided with me, but then requested proof of delivery before continuing. The retarded Paypal site then requires you to enter a tracking number to continue to the next step at all (no options to bypass it, or explain, or contact them...) so you are forced to enter in a random number THEN add your comments below it explaining.

I clearly state that it was sent out 1st class standard, as is made clear in 2 places on his selling page, and that there was no tracking information that could be provided.

They then close down the claim due to incorrect tracking info.

What a bunch of utter incompetant uneducated clowns. The fact i received the damn thing couldn't have been made any more clear.

    argggh, asshats. Still annoyed here

Make it quite clear to him that if he doesnt return your money that you will purse him through the small claims court and that this will be to his cost if you win.

I did that to the guy that tried to rip me off he even ended up having the pack sent from the small claims court and it freaked him right out and paid me my money back.

Even if it goes to a small claims track and even if you win there's no way of making them pay up after the judge ruled in your favor.

Re: Paypal & their dispute system :(

lesson to all of us - there is a very tasty loophole with unrecorded delivery items for dodgy sellers - always ask for recorded.

but you should be doing that anyway really if i have to be brutally honest, you don't know these people.

last thing i sold on ebay worth mentioning was about 3 years ago, a shuttle SN45G, and the stupid, stupid buyer told me it didn't work, i knew the reason it wasn't for him was well documented RAM compatibility issues, he was having none of it. and because i am a pussy who doesn't like confrontation i ended up refunding inc postage. thankfully one of our "lower level employee" computers at works PSU went so wrong it started tripping the breaker for every socket in the office, so i got it drafted in, and there it sits even now - still working perfectly fine.

summary - ebay is crap for everyone

Re: Paypal & their dispute system :(

Right an update now, it was me that cocked up. Apparently the tracking information was for me to send the parcel back to him, not him sending me the original. I was fixated on the fact the seller flat out refused to accept the parcel back and took that as the response. Didn't realise I should have sent it to him anyway. I never read the instructions fully!

Live & learn though, in fairness speaking to paypal over the phone (once you get through their first line monkeys) they were actually quite helpful regarding it all. It's just a shame im a total numptie!
