    Burning sense of disgust

Does anybody else want to vomit when they see people on public transport or just generally in other people's company glued to twitter and facebook. I feel like a ****ing reactionary but there is something genuinely disgusting about the way the world is turning out. If you own a smart phone and actively use it then you are probably wasting the gift of life. Read a ****ing book.

Yeah tell you what, I'll stop using my phone to arrange meeting up with my mates to go kitesurfing and sit and read a book by myself, that sounds like much more fun doesn't it.

Heh didn't think I would get too much agreement on a technology forum
At least one person must agree with me that society needed Twitter like it needed an airborne form of HIV.

Heh I have a phone I just didn't pay 600 <removed> pounds for it. Part of the reason you read books is so you and your friends have interesting things to talk about. I just don't think people need to constantly update the world as to what they are doing such as:

"Getting a bit hungry, might make a sandwhich..."

Kitesurfing sounds fun by the way, more fun than reading

Heh I see your point but Shoreditch isn't ubiquitous through out the modern world like Twitter is. One day when Shoreditch reaches a critical mass of Nathan Barleys and general ******s we could nuke it from orbit. Not sure what we can do when inevitably your twitter account is assigned at birth.

harryslimes, I know you are new (welcome to Hexus btw), but your language in this thread has been pretty terrible.

As a rule, if a word triggers the swear filter, then it is not appropriate on here.

As for the OP, what harm are these people doing you, exactly? Are these people you would be talking to or engaging in other ways? thought not, so why is it any different from them staring into space blankly while listening to music.

It could be worse, they could be reading a Dan Brown book or even Twilight.

    Re: Burning sense of disgust

Sorry if I am coming across as a self righteous prick/troll here, it isn't really my intention. I think what makes me sad is the fact that I know that this is the way things are going to be and there is nothing I can do about it. In 10 years time if you don't have a smart phone with facebook constantly updating you just won't be able to function socially. You can see it now with people's dependence on mobile phones. Try meeting up with people when you don't have a phone. People are never on time anymore, they never arrange back up meeting places. People often cancel plans. Now those things aren't really that bad just different things, well maybe not the canceling plans on people. I think this social networking thing is going to be bad though. I can just feel it in my bones.

    No sympathy, anyone?

    harryslimes,

To what does your name refer?

Also whats with the trollish post? Surely you can write a better diatribe than that, and more importantly, on a more thought provoking and stimulating subject?

I believe in you, show us what your keenly veiled intellect is capable of!

My phone cost me a tenner on eBay, it's full of sand but I can still send an email on it to my mates who are still at work to let them know they need to pull a sicky and get down the beach. Smart phones don't need to cost 600 quid.

    Apologies regarding the swearing.

Yeah you have a point regarding the music or the books thing. I know there wasn't a golden age when everybody was reading Chekov and discussing existentialism. The reason I mention public transport is that that is when I am most exposed to all this stuff. You are right though it isn't really any different to what you describe. It is something bigger than that though. People are trivialising their existence.

Indeed. T-Mobile do one for £40 (£30 + £10 top up) and although it is pretty terrible it is a long way from £600. Then there is the Orange San Francisco with is about £120.

Sorry I just cannot agree with the general sentiment that "things were better before we had technology". They weren't, they were pretty rubbish if you ask me. No rose tinted glasses here, yes life was simpler, but it was also pretty boring.
