Street Lights...now can someone explain how...

on earth councils are being allowed to cut the number of street/road lights on the roads around us when the road tax is the same?

There are two lethal (and I do MEAN lethal) stretches of road near me, they both have speed cameras and they both have street lights, except all but the two over the speed camera have been switched off to save costs - there are boards attached to them saying as much...

So, can someone explain to me how on earth councils are getting away with turning off the safety aspect of lighting because they have had a budget cut when the road tax has stayed the same?

If there's less running costs through less lights there should be less road tax to pay, no?

And don't say its for the environment or that road tax doesn't only pay for the roads - I know that, but come on this is just getting crazy now - they've even started doing it on a three lane section of the M6 after 9pm!!!

Well my council tax hasnt gone up, if it had of done I would of complained as its more local councils than the road tax lot, but still, around here loads are switched off apart from near junctions so its not that bad, not sure if theres some way to get them switched back on, ones near pubs etc would be good to have on as would ones in crimal black spots..

Not the end of the world, I mean car headlights are much better than they previously were...

Also you dont pay 'road tax', its a vehicle excise duty It hasnt been road tax for quite a few years. Unfortunatley all revenue collected from it doesnt go directly back into the roads, it could be used for anything from pensions to education. So basically the motorist is helping to plug the big black hole the goverment(s) are trying to fill.

It's less the fact that the lights are going out that's bothering him, rather that he's still paying for them, even though they're gone.

Maybe if we had cheaper power, less of this offshore nonsense which is consistantly over cost and underdelivering in power.

More Nuclear stations in Wales or someplace remote that is geolocically safe and if cheynobol happens then maybe 100 or so Welsh people die. They used to mine coal, they should be used to death.

Right then, drive up the M6 from Liverpool to Lancaster after dark, you'll see why lights are a good thing on the motorways...... after J31 it becomes "challenging" because there are no lights, and you can't use full beam because of the traffic coming the other way and in front

when i first started driving motorways had lights near the junctions and that was it.

I'm a country bumpkin.... there were virtually no lights out of town where I was in Worcestershire, and there certainly is very little lighting here on the IOM out of town. The motorway is different though, you really can't use full-beam most of the time.. If you could, that would be marvellous and you wouldn't need street lighting...
