    NY Police vs Cyclist

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzE-IMaegzQ

Really should have the sound on, adds to the experience. Also hopefully with more and more views the guy might get his $50 back, and maybe a job as a stuntman.

Produce previous ticket for not riding in bike lane, say you can't win and claim police brutality

neonplanet: you can't expect a police officer to know every law, fine range and procedure, especially given that according to the radio show they were cracking down on cyclists, so probably hadn't handed out fines before

    Re: NY Police vs Cyclist

If there was an obstruction he was riding around, he would have pointed it out to the officer. There wasn't, and he was obstructing traffic as cyclists usually do, despite there being a perfectly good bike lane. He deserved the ticket. Well done to the officer.

    Re: NY Police vs Cyclist

@TeePee, not sure of the laws in the US, but in the UK.

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAn...code/DG_069837

"61......Use of these facilities is not compulsory and will depend on your experience and skills, but they can make your journey safer."

Around west London, it's simply not safe to stay in the bike lanes. Some of them have parked cars, and I've even seen trees planted in them! At least if you cycle on the road everyone knows the rules. Of course you should always follow the rest of the rules as would any other road user.

    Re: NY Police vs Cyclist

Depends on the state, of course.
    NY:
    § 4-12 (p) – Bicycles
    • •

Bicycle riders must use bike path/lane, if provided, except for access, safety, turns, etc. Other vehicles shall not drive on or across bike lanes except for access, safety, turns, etc. Bicyclists may use either side of a 40-foot wide one-way roadway.
If he had a valid defense: 'Safety' he could have told the cop, or disputed the citation. He didn't. My guess is he was just getting in the way of traffic.

    Re: NY Police vs Cyclist

In support of this guy I'm not going to use cycle lanes for a year. It isn't compulsory here and motor vehicle road surfaces are much better than broken up cycle lanes anyway. In fact, make that 5 years .

    Re: NY Police vs Cyclist

Yup. He didn't say 'I left the cycle lane to go around that car and I was back in it before you pulled me over'. He broke the law, and got a ticket. More cyclists should get tickets when they break the law.
