Help me figure out why I should by a fondleslab?

So, its that time of year when I do my company accounts, and its going well for once, as such I've got £500 burning a hole in my pocket, combined with about 32 hours of flights in the coming month, I figured maybe I should get a fondleslab, the thing is, I don't know why.

Its the same way I think lesbians would be fun, but I really can't explain why as they'd have no use/desire for me, as they are lesbians.

So what should I buy, I have a leaning towards the iPad because of its ability to replace sectionals for use in Aviation in the states, but its not a deal breaker.

What would I actually use it for? The screen on most I've seen leave a lot to be desired, to reflective of background noise, wrong aspect for watching films/tv.....

Also I've yet to see any really good games on any of the platforms.

So hexites, what do you have, and what do you use it for? It's not as if this money will be spent on charity if I don't rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish it on tech.

Save your money and spend it on a lesbian show??

On a more serious note though the screen is glossy, like with almost all of those types of tablets which may not help.

Re: Help me figure out why I should by a fondleslab?

Firstly - I think this should be in the "mobile phone" forum which I always think of as the "mobile devices" forum but sadly no one seems to have gotten round to adjusting the name yet....

Secondly - It took me a while to realise what on earth a fondleslab is but I'm adopting the name and will use it to refer to any iPad users who have it just to show off and have no real use for it.... "How's your fondle-slab?" .... I can see it catching on!

Thirdly - Android tablets are really starting to become serious competitors to the iPad now - I have an Asus Eee Pad Transformer and think it's fantastic - I'm awaiting the 3.2 update which should arrive today, the first Android Honeycomb tablet in the UK to receive the latest update. The new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 also looks nice and is even thinner than an IPad 2, but i'm always a little suspect of Samsung's build quality and quality control testing.

Fourth - I can think of lots of uses for a lesbian.

Well in the same analogy, buy one and give it to the cat so you could watch.

Because when someone pulls out their <insert other make of 'fondleslab> you can ask with a certain degree of smugness - "couldn't you afford the real thing?"

For you? I'd buy one to use as a developer test platform, and get working on building a killer app for the financial service industry.

Not to mention, 32GB of portable porn videos!

Re: Help me figure out why I should by a fondleslab?

Since getting my fondleslab (!) I rarely use a laptop in the house anymore.
Pretty good as a silent fanless touchscreen web browser that never gets hot - forum browsing etc - this post is being written on one...

BUT I've tried to use it to replace my netbook/laptop in my briefcase, and my efforts failed, for various reasons e.g. Lack of data transfer, keyboard, program compatibility, etc

Videos? Apart from YouTube videos, never watched one on it - that's what Monitors and TVs are for IMO

Personally I would get a 250GB Archos tablet, because I think I'd use it a lot for films and TV when I'm travelling or offshore.

Re: Help me figure out why I should by a fondleslab?

Well I bought an Apple Ipad2, what should I run on it?

So far I must admit, I'm not overwhelmed. It is jerky at times (when exiting apps) it lacks any fast app switching, there are bugs with installing apps (the economist did not show any progress of downloading until it appeared) and the user interface is less than intutitive, why show always capital key labels with a descrete shift status, why change the return key's caption, and not have an OK button, why split settings...................

But the thing is I've a legitimate work need to look at the possiblity of porting some things to the apple fondleslab, but for me, for 'home' use I can't see much yet, someone name me some apps

Re: Help me figure out why I should by a fondleslab?

I'm in a very similar boat to you - I have the funds burning a hole, I have a sort of prescribed use in that there is a lot of time coming up where i'll be sat around on trains, and since I have already ported some apps over to iOS for iPhones, there is justification for doing it to an iPad also.

Same problem though - I have no clue what I would actually use it for! My laptop is small and light enough to carry around, with a long battery life, and I use that for web browsing/light gaming..so why do I need a tablet for that?

I have pretty much decided that I am going to tell myself NO and wait for the Windows 8 tablets to come along next year (or the year after), since they promise some lovely integration with Win 8 and the possibility of being the first useful tablets where you can switch from a pure touch (but limited) UI to a full desktop capable of running desktop class apps.

Think of a device like the Asus transformer but with a useful OS on it..that would be an amazing device. Someone at work bought one and its lovely..just if only it wasn't running android!

Re: Help me figure out why I should by a fondleslab?

Well so far I must admit I'm not overly impressed.

The web browsing is better on my P-Series VAIO which is VERY slow atom device.

The screen is OK but has a nack for getting light to reflect off it badly, as such you have to wedge it at some tricky angles the magnet case thing is of absolutely no use for this. On the tube it would be simpler to have a small laptop so the screen can be angled on its own mechanisim.

Apps.... So far I'm underwhelemed, the best I've found by a mile is sim city, apps like TED pissed me off because they failed to download their content, I think due to the limitations of the iOS multitasking faking.

The BBC iPlayer app kept stuttering, I can't figure out why, I made sure I had no other traffic on my broadband. In fairness that could be an issue with the BBC's servers, but I can't imagine 11pm being peak time.

So still trying to find a "killer" app that makes me really want it. Oh anyone know any geo-tag orientated photo viewers?

now I'm a bit of an apple "hater" - I refuse to own an apple product , I'd be interested to see how a non apple tablet measures up, given your expectations. I had a play with a Motorola Xoom the other day and quite liked it , but not sure I liked it enough to pay twice the cost of a decent netbook for one !
