    Help! Anyone run an airline?

G/f brother just announced he's getting married early next year in the states. Looking at my flights and hotels + car hire it's coming to £1k. I don't have anything to put to this without pretty much wiping out my liquidity for the forseeable future.

Don't suppose anyone here happens to know Richard Branson, and happens to be able to ask him to fly us as a favour? Long shot I know...

Re: Help! Anyone run an airline?

Flights are annoyingly expensive, best bet is to try www.kayak.co.uk or similar!

Sometimes you can get stellar deals, on flights + hotel, I got one through them which was £200 cheaper than the flights alone, including a suite at a 5 star, good room too had a nice view.

So just search n search. Also remember all those nice taxes.

as its not a relation just say you cant afford it, simple really. if she wants to go you get to make the most of it without her.

Earlier you book the better - as has been said, just start looking. Consider other airports other than the one you want to go to and either take an internal flight or if it isn't too far away, drive. Some flights from the Europe might be cheaper, even with an interconnecting flight.

As an example, Manchester to Atlanta Georgia next march - £429 return

£1000 isn't a lot of money to save or pay towards it monthly, personally i wouldn't bother, if my GF's brother wanted to get married in the states i would mention how he needs to think about everyone else, it might sound a good idea but its not affordable for everyone.

he lives in the states and is marrying an American. It's not one of those, let's all fly to barbados affairs. That would be a lot easier to get out of. They might well end up my in-laws so I can't just not go.

Possible to book a package holiday with a stopover? worked for us when my bro got married back in 2000. Flew to TX via Newark, return flight to Florida then home. I don't know all the details of the package but I know we saved a bundle doing it that way.

Get an experienced travel agent to help you with that though, they have ways and means us mere mortals dont

Re: Help! Anyone run an airline?

Play with the fares. I remember one trip I took to FL, The fare to Tampa connecting through Miami was cheaper than the fare just to Miami on the same flight. Nothing stops you buying the Tampa flight and not flying.

Also, you may be able to find a cheaper flight to a major holiday destination, and then purchase a separate flight to where you want to go. This again may be cheaper if you can use an airline like Southwest or Allegiant for the domestic leg.

Of course, I jumpseat, so what do I know?

You do get a free 1/5 chance of being touched in the naughty place thrown in for your £1,000. Just look nervous and opt-out of being scanned by ionising radiation.

I won't talk about the security they have now, but let's just say you have as much chance of that working here as you do of finding a plane filled with stewardesses that look like that.

If you can't afford it, I'd be saying sorry will have to pass, £1000 is a lot of money before you add any accommodation and food etc on to it too. Not forgetting food.

Don't stop the Mrs from going if she can afford to, but given it's only her brother and it's not like your married to her I'd be giving it a miss.

Behemoth is right, either you can find a way to afford it, or you will have to decline the invitation.

Loads of really good advice about trying to find creative ways to get there. I've had to do similar for work, not because of cost but for timing reasons and availability of seats.

Sorry I disagree if you can't afford to go or don't want to spend that kind of money then simply decline the invitation.

When I got married here in The Netherlands we sent out invitations to everyone but since the all of my family liked in the UK or Canada we expected very few turn outs.

My mother who was in the UK showed up with my step dad
My father also in the UK did not show up as it may not be that far but he could not afford it at the time.
All the rest of my direct Family lives in Canada and none of them showed up, which I expected given the distance.

I do not think any worse of them, it's a lot to ask someone to drop everything and spend that kind of money to fly internationally just to see me get married.

Point being if this guy has any common sense at all he has to realize that some people will not be able to make the flights, and if he thinks less of you for it then he is not someone I would want anything to do with anyway.

Given that your a member of a tech forum, I hope you had some kind of big screen webcasting going on

And for OP, all I can do is re-itterate my original advice, keep searching, as people have said search varients. I've had some very good deals often half price or less via kayak and such.
