Get some exercise...but make sure you're finished at least two hours before you're trying to sleep, because strenuous activities actually realeases stimulants which take a while to settle down.

Drink a glass of warm milk....an old favourite. Actually releases certain chemicals which aid sleep...

I've never (ever) slept well. If I get 4 hours straight, I'm a happy, lucky bunny.

If you seriously NEED to sleep in preparation for the following days events, watch a film and have a few alcoholic drinks. Nothing too heavy - a few glasses of Baileys, or a few scotch on the rocks. Be sure not to drink so much that you'll be hungover/over the alcohol units for driving the next day, and just do your best to relax.

Also, try Nytol. According to my doctor, short of a sleeping pill prescription, Nytol is the next best thing. I've tried every type of Nytol/Night Nurse that they stock in my local pharmacy, and none have helped me. They may help you, though.

You supposedly shouldn't eat anything after 7pm (should you be going to bed between 10pm and 1am), due to the amount of leftover energy from your meal. Being sure to eat nothing at least two or three hours before you sleep may help also. However, a Lettuce sandwich has also been recommended as a sleeping aid.

sleep patterns aren't exactly my strong point, aint had one since i was 17. Can go to bed at 4am and be up for 6am for work, you get used to it after a while. But the best trick I have found is to listen to music when you go to bed, just put your head phones on and drift off. A good bit of heavy metal normally does the trick for me

Seconded. Nytol is cack. I find it realy hard to sleep as well. I've tried all the usual suggestions. I even had some proper sleeping tablets and they didnt do much for me either

Having a drink isnt a bad way to relax but I wouldnt use it as a regular way of getting to sleep. There's too much risk of a pattern and dependency occuring, which is not really what you want.

Reading helps me because it makes me think of something else, kind of clears my mind, plus it makes your eyes tired. The same thing with a computer game or a favorite vid/dvd watch it and take your mind off your worries then go to bed.
If theres nothing to read I usally try to think about a dream that I've had a few times and use that to kick it off. Just anything to get my mind off what I'm stressing about.

I find it almost impossible to go to sleep if I've gone over something too much or going around in circles in my head, I just get too stressed and feel like shouting and then I get over tired, when you reach that point when you feel awake. At that point I usally get up and play computer games till 4/5am and then try again once I feel tired again.

Nytol does work it's just a bit too stealthy, you can't take it and then wait for it to work you have to take it and then clear your mind/think of something else and then it kicks in your suddenly asleep.

Lie down on the sofa with a nice ice cold glass of oj and the tv on low, after a while norm abrahms dolcid tones will have you snoozing, well, untill 4:30am when you wake up with a numb ear, but the you just climb up to bed half asleep and nod off again
