Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

I agree with the advice of reporting the owner to the RSPCA, it appears she has no control of her animal. The sad thing is is that if this was a child then the police will be all over this like a rash, and I hate to hear that a friend has lost his cat

I know what I'd do if I saw a dog with anyone's cat like that even if not my own I'd chase after it the dog and batter its legs, but that's just me.

Like Agent said, tell the police in person and impress on them that it could have been a child.

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

So sorry to hear of your loss, that's heartbreaking Not sure how the law stands, as the Dangerous Dogs act only specifies attacks on Humans as far as I am aware. Ring the police definitely and they can advise. Dog warden won't do anything as the Dog hadn't escaped...

I really hope you can take some kind of action

When Max got bitten by an escaped dog, I rang the Council and they were fab! Said they would send someone out to see them, then sent the people a letter saying that they were in breach of their tenancy agreement by allowing it to escape, told them they and so long to fix the hedge and secure the garden.... After that the Dog was always kept round the back but Max refused to walk past there again

Sorry for your loss. Make the police report and hope they take action. If they don't resolve it to your satisfaction then consider using the civil court.

Sorry to hear that Razer, my cat died (of natural causes) and I was gutted.

I read some where that the police will only deal with dogs if they attack a person, not sure how correct that is, but definitely report her to the police and the local council.

You should also go confront her as well.

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

First off - really sorry to hear about your cat Razer - that sounds truly horrible. Now just a little over 3 years ago, I was walking my 2 dogs (not on those STUPID extender leads either) and a cat had a go at the big lad - literally jumped out of a hedge at him, naturally the dog reacted and that was the end of the cat. I'm not saying it's at all acceptable, but it was a completely natural reaction for the dog as you'd expect. I was absolutely horrified and I had to beat the crap out of the dog to get him to let go (the cat had already done him some mighty damage too mind) but there was nothing I could do about it really. The police were involved, but they said they could do nothing as cats are pretty much classed as wild creatures in the eyes of the law. The only thing they could do was to RECCOMMEND (because he wasn't officially a 'dangerous dog') that we only let him outside muzzled - which we did for the rest of the time we had him. We offered to pay the vet fees for the cat as well, but the owners refused. Felt quite bad about that I have to say.

I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but I thought it would be useful to see a view from the other side as it were. Not that I'm saying that this woman was not doing anything wrong - far from it, she was totally in the wrong letting her dog into your garden. Those extendy leads are a total menace, and everyone using them should be shot.

The lady let the dog into your garden?? The dog then attacked your cat in your own property.

Wouldn't this mean she is liable for any damage or destruction of your belongings on your property, including the death of your cat??

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

A cat is not property, by law, unlike a dog.

But, her negligence has caused emotional distress, and could be actionable.

emotional distress is not the word...its easily affect lel the most, she saw the dog with mini in its mouth...i dread to think how hard it must have been for her to have to see that...we have contacted the police but no word of what is really going on just yet..

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

Man, that is just horrible. Don't have any advice other than what has been offered already, really. Has the woman even apologised to you? Or offered to pay the vet's fee? If she hasn't even tried to make amends, then I'd do everything you can to see that she has some kind of (legal) comeuppance. To be honest, it sounds like the woman is a bit mentally ill if she just allows that kind of thing to happen with little or no reaction and no apology.

What if the cat was a rare breed like a Bengal for example?? She still allowed her dog loose onto private property. She has no right to do that.

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

We have spoken to her, she has said that our cat attacked her dog! it's shocking as mini isnt that kind of cat, she is a normal black and white fluffy cat who is lazy, and just allowed our dog to walk over her and wouldnt even bunch out of his bed for him...not the kind that would attack a dog...exspecially as she was asleep! the women is calling us liars, but hopfully the witness's at the shop will give us statments, contacting the rspca tomoz after work....

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

The dog entered your garden. What was the dog doing in your garden?? It is entirely her fault for letting her dog into your garden.

What if her stupid pooch had entered someone elses garden and they had a couple of bigger dogs which savaged it?? What would she be saying then?? She is only passing the buck.
