My cat killed by dog, what to do?

ok im going to cut this short...basically my cat has been killed by a dog that lives in a street near me, i had to have her put to sleep, she was not a young cat either about 18 years old, but hers the low down on what has happened,

Mini always lays near the gate in the back yard in sun, always, but for some reason this lady in her 60s, allowed her dog which was on one of them exstenion leads to enter our garden, the dog attacked mini and dragged her of! it wasnt untill the people in the shop rang us to let us know that this was happening, my sister went outside and ran up the street to find the old lady had let her dog walk of with our cat in his mouth!! she tried to priz mini out but couldnt, it wasnt untill then that the lady tried to help, it took only a little while to get mini away...but minis jaw was ripped and her tounge was hanging upside down

She was alive but we took her to the vet and she was put to sleep. Now we all know where this old lady lives and what she has done is unreal...and allowing her dog to walk off with my cat as if she was a toy has really hurt me...where do i stand? what do i do? any advice would be great its a sad day.

One word, Police. As a dog owner you are responsible for control of your dog.

Sorry for the loss of your cat.

The police have to realise that it could just have easily been a small child that was mauled. The woman shouldn't have allowed the dog to wander into the garden.

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

Sorry to hear about that, it must be very upsetting to lose a put under those circumstances.

Police is probably the way to go, but what happens after that depends on the type of dog (is it one that is classed as dangerous). One scenario is that the woman could be put under some order to keep better control of the dog, or ordered only to let it out muzzled. She could be fines, or the dog could be put down. or any combination of those. You might get some financial compensation, but I suspect not much, maybe for distress, but to get that you might have to pursue a claim through the courts.

And sadly, none of that will bring Mini back.

    But certainly worth reporting it

this is what we thought, i personally want the dog put down, n the owner fined for allowing her dog to do such a thing, it was some kind of terrier cross jack russel not 100% sure if it was one or the other

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

Definately call the police, the dog entered your garden to get to your cat, so they have to act. Personally i`d be inclined to go round the house and lynch the dog myself.

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

well, she allows her dog to act in a manner that is cruel to other animals, think they may have some course of action.

So this lady did absolutely nothing while your cat was savaged by her dog? thats despicable

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

Sorry to hear about your cat, horrible to lose a pet.

Just to add to the chorus, police.

Around here they take dangerous dog reports very seriously, got to assume it's similar nationally. Particularly with the owner showing such little regard. With witness' and the vet's statement you stand a good chance of getting something done.

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

Don't call the police, go to the station to file a report and speak to someone in person.

I know it might sound like a minor difference, but you'll have the paperwork to back the report up, along with a known face at the station to speak to should you have any issues.

Really sorry for your loss mate, pets are always part of the family

That's terrible razer . Very sorry to hear about Mini. As Agent says, it's probably best to report this in person, as hard as that will no doubt be

Re: My cat killed by dog, what to do?

razer, so sorry mate. Really hope the police take this seriously and act on it; as everyone says, it doesn't begin to compensate for your loss & the awfulness of the situation but something should be done, it could be someone else's pet/child, & anyway it's the principle. Can't come down too hard on irresponsible dog owners for my liking. Just unthinkable to lose a pet like that, speaking as a former cat owner.
