thats a pretty blatant generalisation, but theres also a fair bit of truth in it. not everyone in oz thinks like that, id say it would (hopefully) be the minority. no more than people saying they hate pakis and orientals here.

It is a generalisation, yes. I'm not about to write an essay on it, cos I really cant be arsed but it's certainly not a minority thing. The Liberal party (the right wing party in Australia) who have been in power for 13 years (and at this rate will win the upcoming election) have an immigration and asylum policy bordering on the obscene. They are continuously voted into power, and they almost always put immigration at the top of the issues to debate before an election.

So basically you like the country and the city but not the people, or at least their views on immigration. I am sorry to hear that it is so difficult to actually become a citizen too. I had heard that it would be ok as my wife has such a highly sought after career, but from what you have said it is anything but.
Could you please let me know where to apply for a 1 year work visa too please.

A mate of mine and his wife just emigrated to Australia. They got in on her qualifications as a teacher. They went to an agency who took all their details and then decided whether to 'represent' them and put everything forward. Obviously if the agency felt that they didn't have the qualifications then they wouldn't have put it through. I don't know the costs but I do know it went through very smoothly.

Well as I mentioned in my first post my wife is a nurse with a 2.1 degree in nursing and she can specialize in ICU or A+E, plus she is also an E grade which means she is a senior nurse. Myself on the other hand I am a car salesman with 10 gcse's and lots of clever banter. i was hoping to sell up here and move there.

I liked some of the people, obviously! I made a lot of good friends that hopefully will be mates for life.

I dunno, it's hard to describe. I felt that the "normal" people in the country suffered, just like the British, the worst traits of those that live in a rich consumerist society; selfish, greedy and introverted. Put it this way; if they sold the Daily Mail in Australia it would do very nicely indeed.

If you or your partner is a member of one of the high need groups (teacher, nurse etc) it will be a lot easier I would have thought. Oh (and I say this with pitiful seriousness) it will probably help if she is not asian.

Well yes my wife is a nurse and she is not asian although it seems a shame that it would matter if she was. Thanks for all your help Dabeeeenster, hopefully it will help my wife and I decide whether to go or not.

This post is brought to you from the Internet Access terminals in the Executive Lounge at Manchester Airport...

I've spent all my sterling cash, and in just under 3 hours I'll be making my one-way trip to Sweden.
Couple of hectic weeks of registering personal numbers, setting up bank accounts and trying to get a mobile phone then I move into my new apartment - living in a hotel in the meantime.

    Excited?
    I should coco!
Just have to put up with no broadband for a few weeks, then I should be aiming a nice 8 or 10Mbps in my apartment

the liberals will loose the next election, maybe you were just hanging out with the wrong people.

as an aussie in the uk a lot of what you are describing is what i see here, and the daily mail is already selling here. at least theres no bnp equivalent in oz.

i agree to emigration without money/qualifications is difficult, and something needs to be done about those policies.

The Liberals are leading the polls atm. All of my friends in Oz are 100% anti howard.

I'm not saying there are not issues here, there are, but I feel that they are not as pervasive as they are in the UK.

As for there being no BNP equivalent in the UK, that is simply not true. One nation have a very large following in certain parts of the country.

never let the truth get in the way of putting forward an opinion
    http://www.roymorgan.com/news/polls/2004/3761/

lathams popularity is also ahead of howard, a big factor in elections. in reality tho these 2 parties are quite similar on policy.

sounds like you had a bad experience, spend lots of time in queensland.

the one nation party has only 1 federal member of parliament (voted in by queenslanders) and has had failing party membership and poppularity ever since it appeared 6 months ago. sadly you cant say the same here, seems poppularity is on the rise.
