    I was more thinking job hunting is off the agenda for a bit - after the online coverage....

    Technically there is a criminal record for a caution, it is just immediately spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (as amended by Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008), or at the end of the conditional period if a conditional caution.

    I got into a fight with some drunk on my street, last year, cos he threw a bottle at my car window, wound up with a caution for it, and apparently that'll be on my criminal record, even though it was only a caution

    'Spent' convictions remain as a criminal record, it is just that they don't have to be declared except in some specific circumstances.
