Re: Making someone remember to unlock their computer through negative reinforcement

Running out of ideas fin, no need to be so bitter, always time for a good ole fashioned lemon party!

What was it that got set on hairies PC as his default homepage that time? I honestly can't remember it was so long ago.

Failing that the TROLOLOLOLOLOL song might work, make it the system sound for ANY action.

Edit the hosts file and just set the IP of all his favourite sites to 127.0.0.1 - after continuous attempts to access the sites to no avail he might be forced to do some work...

Re: Making someone remember to unlock their computer through negative reinforcement

Screen rotation, 180 degrees, was the fave back in the day (by which I mean more than 10 years ago, obviously ).

Personally I'd change his password, lock his computer, and make him get IT services (assuming you have central IT services of some kind) to reset it for him. Do this every time he doesn't lock his computer. He'll get a pretty heavy dose from ITS when he's contacting them several times a day to reset his password...

That would be my thought. It's standard procedure; you break the acceptable use policy, you get asswhupped by your manager & disciplined.

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

Heres a couple i did in the past.

Just after Man United beat Chelsea in the champions league i change a few of his more obscure windows sounds and his anti virus update sound to the "Glory Glory Man United" song. I see your loaction says Newcastle so that could work quite nicely for you if he's a football fan.

I also did the set a friends favourite desktop icon to restart his pc too. You could take that a step further and set it so that it locks his workstation instead. Hopefully he has a facebook shortcut icon you can abuse for this.

Failing that, as others have said, if he's not getting the hint, maybe getting him disciplined is the only way.

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

It's a boring, sensible suggestion, but our work PCs automatically lock if left unattended for more than a few minutes. Can't you just turn this option on?

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

I remember once, many years ago I got called up in front of the manager for leaving my computer unlocked for less than a min when I went to get a print out, my computer was in full view of the printer, but the rules were to never leave your smart card in the computer when you are not at it, and I got a right bollocking for doing it.
Now before you guys starts saying that is draconian, I was working for the dwp at the time and in a jobcentre so it kinda makes sense to never take any risks in that enviroment.
