Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

Maybe its time to "out him" in front of all his friends in facebook.
He might not come back to work the next day though.

I would go also go with the previous suggestion of messing with his host file. use it to direct youtube to an autoplaying movie "you are an idiot"...

Aye, you wouldn't catch any other government departments being lax with confidential data.

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

Why not accidentally hit the rest button and make him loose what he's not saved that he's supposed to be working on when he's on Face Book ? That would teach him to lock it in future.

Or perhaps some half naked ladies on screen for when the boss walks in ?

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

While there are plenty of amusing suggestions here, I'd take the formal/official route otherwise your actions could be interpreted as pranking or bullying - and land you in trouble too.

Does your workplace have a published Acceptable Use Policy for the internet? Is he breaking it? If so, report it to your HR department and let them handle it.

If not, and you both report to the same manager, report it to your manager and let him have a quiet word with the intern.

If you're a SysAdmin at your workplace, implement a Group Policy that sets a Screensaver Timeout, along with a Screensaver Password. Set the timeout to something sensible like 15mins... or 5mins if you're feeling evil.

If you have any general-use kiosk/public facing/conference room machines, make sure the GPO is not applied to these machines (you can always use a Deny Read on the GPO object for those individual machines).

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

    well it came to this....

    His hosts file now contains

    Code:
    # Block Facebook
    127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
    127.0.0.1 facebook.com
    127.0.0.1 static.ak.fbcdn.net

so that should be it pretty well blocked, I doubt he would check the hosts file for a while

Nice, will do that next time, Youtube is next up as he has spent the rest of the afternoon 'researching' what he needs to do for a hyper-v server, but it looks a lot like watching clips from Dragon's Den

How did this guy get the job in the first place?

I work for sky and the policy on locking computers is very strict, and rightly so when we have customer data on screen.

Placement from a local learning place, just doesn't seem motivated which for me is frustrating trying to get a decent amount of work out while keeping on top of my own work

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

    Very very easy!

Assuming you guys use Win7, enable screensaver. Set screensaver to kick in after 1 minute of inactivity and there's also an option, most likely in Power settings in Control Panel where you can choose that after screensaver kicks in and then you come, you will be back at the login screen. i.e. Windows gets locked.

Re: Making someone remember to lock their computer through negative reinforcement

wow all these great pranks but no one suggested one of the other old classics, change the windows default language, set it to something nice like Chinese or Hebrew

Another more subtal trick is change the keyboard to a French layout, which is nasty for the simple reason that all the number keys are inverted, you have to hold shift to get numbers.
It really throws you if you're trying to work on a french laptop where it's marked let alone on a normal uk keyboard.

Although the big problem with these thing is, as has been mentioned, you could get in more trouble than him and he's going to be wasting more time trying to fix the things you're doing than actually working.

There's also a matter of example, if he knows you're wasting time setting up these things then he could well see it as a permissible to waste time

Just keep doing what you're doing, block all the basic non productivity websites like Amazon/youtube/facebook/twitter and just leave it at that.

Seriously sounds like a **** and im suprised he hasnt been kicked out of his placement!

There isn't much danger in that, so far today he has installed updates using Windows Update on a machine and restarted it...

When I reckon he does about 90 minutes of actual work a day (given the time it took to configure a desktop server to actually get Server 2k8 on it) I don't think there is much risk of that, and he just received a verbal warning today about it, left the building with it unlocked for 15 minutes
