A club I'm involved with is wanting to build a website.
I've built a few myself in the past using basic html skills with hosts like Freeservers, but didn't really like the results much (more down to my skills than anything else).
The club is looking for a way to build a simple yet good looking site, no pop-ups, email, and which links to major search engines (for free - or at least for very little).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the name of this impossible chimera?

sounds reasonable - any recommendations?
Web Mania are generally regarded as the best around for price/performance.
Basic package included 500MB web space, PHP, SQL, unlimited POP e-mail, etc.
Quite a few people on Hexus use them, including myself!
