    Barbed Wire

What are the legalities of this with regards putting it up on a fence at the end of a garden to stop trespassers, for example?

    Thanks.

I'm sure you need a warning sign that is clearly visble from ground level.

And I'd go for public liability insurance too TBH!

It's probably best avoided, legally speaking, unless you really feel it's necessary.

Trust me, I would if i could. Plan to live in the country when i'm older. Too many problems round these parts (part of the reason we need barbed wire )

Acts of Parliament impose restrictions upon the use of barbed wire on fencing, principally where the boundary adjoins a public highway. If it is felt that the barbed wire may possibly cause injury to people or animals then it is not permitted. In most scenarios where it is permitted by local authorities the barbed wire must be set back from the highway at an agreed distance.

Using barbed wire between property boundaries, however, is a slightly more grey area. Generally speaking it is allowed but frowned upon. Advice should be sought from local Police and Council before proceeding.

    Well I wouldnt say that.

The idea that an Englishman's home is his castle is kind of obsolete I'm afraid .

Round my area a lot of walls are topped in broken glass.

I reckon barbed wire must be ultra-legal compared to that?

My Grandad is (or was) a farmer so barbed wire doesn't frighten me at all, it's that razor wire that makes me think twice....

    That's the general idea...

Nah... We want it mainly as a deterrent... But if someone climbing over, trespassing, into our garden, happens to injure themselves on the barbed wire, well... Cest la vie!

The back of our garden joins onto some private garages which are used by the nearby council houses.

Then you should definately be made aware that, certainly in the commercial and industrial sector but often private landowners where heavily recommended by the authorities, those who have erected barbed wire or other such 'defenses' have public liability insurance.

If someone injures themself on barbed wire that you have erected and you do not have public liability insurance then you are liable for any damages. A crazy situation and just about everyone reacts the same, it borders into the "old man with a shotgun defending his property" scenarios.

Nobody is saying you can't do it full stop (So long as it doesn't adjoin a public highway) but you should be fully aware of the risks involved. I know what it's like, I am a private landowner with council tenants on either side with somewhat 'active' and mischievous children. If it were up to me I'd have landmines on my boundaries.....but then what if one of the little darlings stubs their toe on one?
