Ebay (again) scam or just weird?!?

right a week or so ago my dad was selling a car on ebay ,it got 1 bid from a guy in ireland when the auction ended he said he didnt have enough money to buy it bla bla but he then offered him £150 for being an a-hole (his words) and messing him around.

no obviously i said "WTF its dodgy leave it" but today a cheque arrived for £150 ,now i still think its dodgy but how is it dodgy? i mean the guy is not actually paying for anything and so doesnt have anything to gain and there is no way he can make any money out of this either(or is there?) but why pay £150 if you cant afford to pay for the auction it dot make sense

    So what would you recommend
(i ve suggested cashing it at a cash covertor type place but i dont know if they take your details down incase it goes wrong?)

t.b.h it does sound like a scam , i would proably not take it as i think it may be from a stolen cheque book etc check the name with the police or the bank the cheque is made from.

If it was me, I'd take it into my bank and explain why I got it. I'd say that I dont want to pay it in if it might be stolen. I'm sure they could check, and would be very happy to recover stolen cheque to hand to police. You could then become super sleuth and help police nab the gangsta robbers... Ahem, sorry.

I'm sure the bank would understand.

*edit* If is IS stolen, be aware that the police might want to check your ebay stuff/PC, to ensure it wasn't you who nicked it. So keep all emails, etc.

If the guy's got a stolen cheque book why would he want to just give the money away to people rather than making money from it himself? It still doesn't make sense.

Probably the guy know the cheque will bounce and then your father would have to pay the bank fee for the cheque which useally sits around the £30 mark.

go to cash convertors and get the cash - 5% on the spot, regardless of weather it will bounce or not ?
