    mobile scam warning

just got a call on my mobile from a 'witheld number' - answered it to get a cheezy voice saying "congratulations, you've just won a--" so I hung up immediately.
god only knows if I got my arse raped a few quid but hopefully not at all, I'm about to call orange to see what they say but to all you out there be warned. I already called the TPS for my mobile no. but clearly this is different.

I got it too, it must be going through the numbers as Ive never put my mobile number anywhere. It phoned my mums payg phone, and that is only 3weeks old.

Im almost 100% sure they cant charge you anything just for answering the call tho.

Nope, you'll not get charged anything just for answering the phone, nor can they reverse charge you during a call if you press a button etc. They just want you to call back on a premium rate number.

Hmm, on a similar note i've recently been receiving ringtones from an anonymous number, with no message of any kind. I've had the phone less than a month, and haven't put my new number down anywhere. Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Personally if I get a call on either my mobile or landline that appears as number withheld or unknown number then it doesn't get answered at all, simple as that. Speak to the answerphone and if it's important they'll leave a message, if they don't then it obviously wasn't important enough for me to have picked it up.

Its quite possible that your numbers been recycled and the previous owner had these sent to them. There is a new regulation that should allow you to send STOP to whatever number is sending these, and by law they have to desist sending them (mainly due to unwanted spam / premium txts)

You've probably put your number into a load of databases via 'free ringtones' etc

Another way may have been one of your dirends using a free online txt system to txt you, its not your choice, but that friend may have inadvertadly put your number on the system.

Im surprised i dont get any spam on my phone, i put number on a lot of forms

had a mate who got connected then found out loads of buisnesses calling them [home number] - turns out BT gave them a number for some dodgy business that owed loads of suppliers in the order of thousands and thus mate became black-listed [or what ever the term is]. Called BT, gave them an ear-full, threatened legal action and things got fixed straight away...but really bad on BT for recycling numbers like that without checking it out.

The premium txt scam is the worst of them as you get charged for recieving that is just bollocks. My gf gets jokes which she never signed up for and never registered for anything. Complained to vodafone and they said it wasnt there prob and said it was from an o2 company. you shouldnt be charged for receiving a text or call thats just stupid, if you want something premium it should come out of the cost of you sending a request txt (asking for it).

seeing as you cant disable the service its even worse. The joke sending buggers change the number too.

Don't hang up straight away, leave them on the line for as long as possible. Might only cost them a little more, but when people don't call their premium lines and they have bigger phone bills they may p!$$ off!

Hate these things, got a massive phone bill this month coz some bastard company keeps texting me twice a weekend, no matter how many times i've tried to get them to stop. Also am receiving messages from some 89 number asking where I've been coz I haven't been replying, then there's loads of lines and at the bottom it says that messages received cost £1.50!!! How do they get away with this crap? Why do WE have to put up with it??

I just got a message on my phone saying

"You have a new message - Call 0871 blah blah blah to retrieve it"

I had 2 missed calls and 2 messages on my phone (one message being that one)
