Hmmm, perhaps I'm taking a strange view, but I didn't observe it. Our teacher told us that he wouldn't be doing it, but we could if we wanted. But I don't think anyone in my class did.

Yup, we even shut off the callcentre for 3 minutes, and redirected them to an answerphone message asking them to call back in 3 minutes

Was silent for three minutes because I was asked politely and did not wish to offend others who wished to partake, wouldn't have done otherwise.
Didn't feel the need to quiz everyone as to whether they spent hours at home having silences for the numerous other dying from other "acts of god" / preventable disease / war / famine around the world, because there's clearly no moral inconsistency going on there at all.
I'm saying that it's a little strange to observe a silence for one set of people who died unnaturally and not for another. Yes, lots of people died, and yes it's bad - but people unnecessarily die every day - I just find it daft that we only commemorate those that die in a big group.Originally Posted by Deckard
If it's respectful to observe a silence for those who died in the Earthquake/Tsunami, is it not disrespectful to not have a silence for everyone else?
Wouldn't it be better if we just found a bit of time, every day (on our own, at work, or otherwise), to realise just how bloody lucky we are to be alive?
Just my 2p.
I didn't observe the silence either.
sure someone already made this point - world war 1 and 2, theres a 2 minute silence - because MILLIONS of people died for us preserving the way we live
so why is it 3 minutes for 130 thousand indeonesians ? are they more important than our grandfathers who died to save us ?

I can't honestly believe i'm hearing this. Its 3 minutes because its recent ITS NOW, and it was a natural disaster, NOT by mans hand. WWI and WWII was of our making and it IS not a tradegy it was war. Our Grandfathers choose to fight for our country and if necessary die for it. These people are all INNOCENT victims. Thats why its 3 minutes.
That doesn't mean we don't respect the dead. Whether it be one life or hundreds of thousands. The 3 minutes silence was simply to respect the dead across many countries, british, indian, indonesian, sri lankian. and the many other countries that lost life.
Its 3 minutes about thinking about someone else, those that died, those that have lost loved ones, those that may have lost whole families.
Just because you have no concept of the loss they are facing doesn't mean you can just ignore it

Swafe, I've got to stop you there. I don't think you can fairly say that no one gives a stuff about the Jews, and I don't know of many Germans who don't care anout them. And I'm sure that the ones who don't would still not care regardless of nationality.
Remembering the victims is fine, I do it in my own way. However the use of minute silences has increased greatly recently, originally it was for the fallen soldiers in the world wars, and I think that partly doing them alot reduces the impact that it had for its original purpose. The use of these silencs, much like all these armbands and wrist bands and so forth allows people who would never be bothered to do anything for charity or make a point to remember the dead to do it for convenience, as they can be easily seen to be doing it, but would not otherwise be bothered.

i think there losing its effect - silences - more and more there are these days, there seems to be a minutes silence for everything now, people just pump them out to pretend they care....its losing its meaning tho, back in the day youd stop and remember who died and what it really meant, im not saying we dont now, years ago it just seemed more meaningful...

Does having a loved one killed by natural disaster make it somewhat special then? In what way does being in the wrong place at the wrong time give these persons right to a silence, which doesn't to the others? To make a statement of similar weight (and inaccuracy? ) to yours:
Just because you have no concept of just how many "innocent" people die "before their time" doesn't mean you can focus all of your respect to those dying in big groups.
A little tolerance of people having differing attitudes with how to deal with this might be required - I'm aware my first post was not made in an entirely kosher tone, for which you have my sincerest apologies, I had an arsy day. However, suggesting members of this board are lucky enough to never have experienced loss is possibly, I think, a little insensitive.
i think the way this thread has gone is just plain arguementative and quite disgusting on such a basic sign of respect.
it has nothing to do with how many minutes, seconds or hours different events have. its just about sparing some time to think of others and remember just how damn lucky you are.
I don't recall observing it. I was busy.
