John Hurt is a major loss

The Elephant Man is astoundingly good but his best was The Naked Civil Servant, which I enjoyed utterly

The Sphere was a half decent sci fi that he effectively made watchable.. and lets not forget he was the voice or Aragorn in the original Lord of the Rings

Mr Hurt.. I salute you and will not dust my mantle piece for a week in honour of your Quentin Crisp

We can't not mention him playing the unforgetable Kane in Ridley Scott's original Alien.

He was also the voice of the Dragon in Merlin. His voice was instantly recognisable, almost hypnotic and capable of expressing a multitude of emotions. You almost didn't need to see his face to appreciate his acting...

Whilst I grew up watching original BSG, Allo Allo etc, I can't help feeling that plenty of actors and musicians get attention, but it seems not so much the engineers and scientists.

MRI scanners have literally improved the quality and length of life of several close friends. And Hans Rosling's talks are very watchable and got some of my non-science-minded friends interested in statistics!

Thank you to these great people. Peter Mansfield's story seems particularly interesting. Left school at 15, and at 18 went to work for the "Rocket Propulsion Department" in some part of what's now the MoD. I imagine the hiring process was something like:

Boy: "Hello Sir, I like these rockets"
MoD person: "Jolly good chap, would you like a job?"
