Getting into online share dealing?

I was thinking today about getting into online share dealing with small amounts of money. I am only a student but very intrested in making some money even if its a small amount from the stock market.

Has anyone had any experience in doing this or does anyone know of any sites that sort of walk you through the process?

A greek friend of mine when at uni got into penny shares... he lost loads of money i think.

As far as I can remember, I think HSBC have an online share buying/selling thing, for a one-off fee of around £15, I've not tried it though... To be honest, share dealing, like gambling, rewards those who know the most, and if you just want to 'give it a try', you'll likely end up losing your money (like I did with gambling ) If you've got a bit of money, it's probably best off in an ISA, the added risk of shares isn't worth it imho.

cheers, had a look myself and alot of places charge 15 quid per transaction, so I will put the idea on the shelf for a while.

There are cheaper options than that I think... But generally speaking it's probably easier to 'make' a bit of money by working at least part time...?

And quarterly account fees on top.

£7.50 if you trade 10 or more times a quarter (I.E. spend £75). No way do I have the financial muscle to make that pay.

I think most of these things are targetted at habitual home traders / day traders not occasional stuff

heh, I work 30 hours a week plus my lectures. People think uni is easy!

Granted I dont do any of my essays until the night they are due in. But I find its just a hassle now, cant wait to get out and earn real money back in London.

Just don't do what I did and start your dissertation the night before it has to be handed in... That's why I have a 2.2

I actually took 3 days to do my dissertation and just found out about my grade for it. I got a C. Hopefully I will get a 2:1 have you found that a 2:2 is a disadvantage. I am worried!

Yes and no. If you have good A level results a 2.2 isn't much of a problem for most employers especially when you have some experience. Having said that though there are companies and agents that won't even consider you unless you have a 2.1 - and in a good subject from a good university.
