    Ballistic magnetoresistance, What Happened?

Just wondered if anyone knew what happened to the Ballistic magnetoresistance (BMR) technology? I remember reading a couple of years back how it was supposed to replace IBM's GMR (which itself led to the large capacity HDDs we have nowadays. Before GMR was released, a big HDD was about 2gb.).

For those who don't know what BMR is: http://www.phys.uni.torun.pl/~jkob/p...s/node144.html

Anyone know where the technology went?

As for the technology used in HDD's. Maybe they had issues with the electromagnetic forces releasing too much RF interference or the magnetic forces used were causing data corruption on the drives themselves.

Well, when I read about it, the preliminary tests were successful, although they hadn't been at say 1TB capacity, but instead 400gb (which in its days was ENOURMOUS!).

I wonder whether it was IBM's reluctance to have its technology superceded that brought about the downfall of the BMR technology?

I went to a seagate presentation the other day about their future read head technology and there was no mention of BMR I'm afraid. I think it is just one of those ideas that hasn't quite got off the ground yet
