Just give them the benifit of the doubt. I know its hard, and you're trying to protect them, but you really have to start trusting them. 13 is a difficult age anyway, dont have a go at them or anything cos at 13 you're already "omg, i'm not talking to my DAD!" so you dont want to risk pushing them away over something silly.

If it were me i'd just do as said above and start a convo like "oooo, so who's james" just jokingly winding them up kinda thing, nowt serious. they'll prolly just say "boy in my class i fancy" then you can just relax if they say "my bf" then tbh, they prolly just have a quick peck on the lips after school

as i said, trust them, they'll thank you for it later
    good advice

seriously though, screen names don't usually mean anything. you should see my list, people always talking about suicide, how much they love somebody (then it changes to somebody else every week) etc etc. then when you see them in person, (well, the people i know and who have these names) they are happy and cheerful, nothing wrong with them, not depressed what so ever..

Cant I use the "Whos James then?....and if he lays a finger on you i'll 'kin skin the little roach & nail him to a tree! " tactic?

I do actually trust them both & I respect their right to privacy. Just needed reassurance s'all, from you nice people.

ya, the "Whos James" thing might work, and if she is too embaressed to talk about it, fair enough, just don't keep it on her, make sure you have something else backed up to talk about just incase if you need to change the subject..

if you want to ask the question just do it in the 'embarrassing dad' fashion... ofcourse that's probably a daft suggestion as they'll deny it.... hmm. lol

If it was serious they'd tell you themselves . Also - those names are quite popular with girls around that age, I wouldn't worry too much at all.

oh yeah forgot to say, my little cousin who's 14 is on my msn list and she's had such names as "if u're nauty, go to your room, if you wanna be naughty go to mine" etc, i was a bit shocked since she was my little cousin, but she's got her head screwed on and it's just a silly phase girls go through. nowt to worry about i know it's hard but just RELAX!

My daughter is 16 now and it becomes easier to talk than when she was 13/14. But it should be lighthearted and friendly when you do pass comment. Make then know you trust them completely, but that Dads like to worry, and you are only concerned for their well being.

What shocked me most were the magazines they read. If you really wanna start worrying have a read of one of them . The trouble is I remember what I was doing when I was 16

Best thing a Dad can do for his daughter, is be there, but be background. Every now and then do something for them thatreally suprises them, so they knowDad's a good guy, and on the whole so long as they love you, they'll fal into your arms if they needhelp.

My Sis and my Dad get on like a house on fire. Really well. When I was 15 me and my Dad built a boat...a Mirror Dinghy. We named it Smeagol. My sister was gutted that she wasnt old enough to actually help build it.

Later on, my Dad got a bigger sailing boat....£6k small yacht. He called it "Laura B" (my sis's name and initial and she was OVER THE MOON...really touched.

Why dont you go get them both a tenners worth of bracelet. Silver. Nothing too posh. They'll only loose it. Just because you care. Something they DIDNT ask for.

    Then see

I get them loads of gifts. Phones, trinkets etc.

& yeah, I've seen some of those 'teen' mags

Like Clingy says, maybe it's because I remember what I was like. A right evil lil so&so.

I think the real problem here is there father talking to them over a interweb chat client.

Well they live over in Colchester & never have their mobiles on (even tho I pay the bill). And as they seen to be permenantly online it's a convenient way to stay in touch
I see them every week anyhow.

Most girls MSN names are quite dodgy:

(And thats the tame ones I could show, without swear words or harder sexual references)

^^ indeed. all the girls on my contact list bar one have names with some sort of sexual references in, even my girlfriends 11 year old cousin has mentioned things like thongs and being naughty with a boy. Had to draw the line there and had to use MsgPlus' custom names feature for her.
