they charge you 1.95 on ur credit card when you sign up, you then get your bankstatment 4 days later to see the code they give you. This code you use to activate your paypal account, only once you have verified this code can u start making transfers if I understand correctly. I signed up on friday nite, need 4 working days till its on credit card statement.

in fact I never got asked for my card details until I clicked 'pay for ebay item' or something similar, filled out the form, checked amount was correct (it was), then off I went. got confirmation email saying 'ta very much' from seller and that I assume is that.
I haven't asked for any account of any sort where my money is held with ebay/paypal [as I understand it] as I have herad bad things going that way. I envisage I will only ever deal through paypal should I need to pay for something that way, at which point I only pay the amount required, my prefered payment method is direct or a cheque. paypal is a teeny bit annoy due to hidden catches and costs they throw on you... if they take money out of my account un-lawfully then book = thrown at them. This can easily be checked by myself and any unauthorised transaction in my account can be chased up by my bank - they're very good like that. [and they don't get p*ssy if you go below zero squid...or overdrawn. no extra charges - i hate these other banks that say "you were overdrawn, we've therefore fined you £25", WTF is the use in that?! no, my bank is nice and helpful. they will even take old Franc notes and convert to euros...even now, ages after it all changed]

edit: just checked my paypal account, says transaction completed. so dunno what the deal was about the verification code etc but its all been done without...

afaik you can pay with paypal without being a member, it's just like paying with your credit card on any other site?

alright then, that must have been for selling purposes then (signed up for the premier account). Sorry for any confusion, if only I had known this sooner, missed out on such a good deal, fook!
