    Omgz we lost structural integrity!

    Yesterday was a fun day.

8:30am, fire alarms go down and immediately i get out of bed and run downstairs with my pyjama bottoms, my dressing gown and my door key. I get down to the lower floors and there's literally waterfalls coming down the walls so i thought there had been a fire and the fire services had put it out or were attempting to hence all the water.

We got downstairs and were told to wait in a canteen across the road which is unusual. Turns out there was a huge flood due to one of the service pipes exploding (high pressure ones for fire services) and the 4th floor had filled up to waist height. All the walls and floors had collapsed also (reminder that this is a 16 story modern building)

So eventually, 12 hours of waiting in my PJ's with no money or phone we got let back in! Well, only floors 8 to 14 were allowed back in to stay, everyone else had to find alternative accomodation. Anyway, we got free food, free drinks, extensions on our deadlines and £20 each for waiting 12 hours in our PJ's. It was all over the south east local news apparently if anyone caught a glimpse of it. I was one of the unlucky few without any shoes!

Anyone see it on the news?

I once slept right through a fire alarm at my halls of residence (we had lots of false alarms). There was a bell in each room which was loud enough to hurt your ears, so god knows how I did it.

Anyway was all your stuff alright? Sounds pretty nuts!

Yeh fortunately i live on the 13th floor so my stuff was fine. People on 4 and below had quite a lot of damage done to their rooms. Not sure about their property though.

It's quite easy to sleep through a fire alarm, you get used to them going off so tend to ignore them. The uni has been mega screwed over though. They've lost tens of thousands of pounds just on the students alone let alone all the repair work etc.

Bah - how come some people lead such exiting and extraordinary lives. I've never peen paid to stand outside in my pyjamas whilst 2 floors of a bulding collapse. So mundane, i may as well not bother living

Haha, just what i was thinking. But that's what they said, that it was losing structural integrity and we needed to abandon the place. "ABANDON SHIP!" >_<

One floor collapsed i believe, not sure though. It was very wet that's for sure.

That's crazy! How can just one floor collapse? I wouldn't feel safe living on the floors above, especially on the 13th floor!

Who gave you £20 by the way? What on earth for?

A floor would collapse because there was tens of cubic metres of water. That's a lot of water which would account for many tons.

I got £20 because they turned off the electric so apparently my food would have gone off because it was 12 hours uncooled. Shame i had no food in the fridge Free money for nothing! It should be compensation really for messing up my day!

Heh, I get why it would have collapsed, am just stunned that the floors above then didn't collapse too, considering it would've lost so much structure below it to hold it up!

It's pretty dodgy I agree, but nearly all the strength in a modern tall building is in the central core columns. The walls then basically just hang off that, also supported by the external walls.

Free lunch? Free breakfast, free lunch, free dinner. As well as any drinks from the drink machines, all the chocolate and fruit and crisps etc. Everything that was in the canteen was free
