we (me and fraggie) did it at work (siemens) it was a really good opportunity to remember everything that went on and to let families who still have a loved one know everyone are thinking of them.

but saying that some silly sod didnt take the plug out there phone so it spoiled the moment a bit so we carried on for 5 minutes insead of 2 so all was not lost.

If somebody's child died 10 streets away, would you make the same effort? Of course not.
How close you are to an event determines what your response should be.
People respected this two-minute silence because they were shocked that something so dreadful could happen so close to them. It was a natural response.

The fact that these bombings were meant as an attack on ALL of us living in the West makes it even more understandable that we went out of our way to show support for each other, and SHOW these terrorists that they won't beat us.

We have a minutes silence on Armastice day and that was 87 years ago. We do it to remember the sacrifice made by others. It's called a remark of respect. It also has the outcome of binding the nation together. All the petty squabbles are forgotten and for a brief period we act as one.

Todays 2 minutes silence will not bring people back or heal their wounds. What it does do is show solidarity for a way of life and is a mark of respect to those that were murdered or injured.

Edit - that link above is for Surrey Satellites - they specialise in micro satellites not launching sections of the ISS. so it's not applicable

Yeah, and if those damned Polish hadn't been at home when Germany invaded, there wouldn't have been a World War 2.

Nice attempt at spin, but no cigar matey.

Clearly we have very different views. For starters the proximity to such an event dosn't matter to me. London may as well be a million miles away. Furthermore your notion of binding a nation and solidarity is rather sickening. Clearly it is not the case as illustrated by the perpetrators of this attack. I uphold the silence in acknowledgement of the end of the first world war.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
