    Lapton or Desktop (for Uni)

Im going to uni this year, and my fokes said they would my me eather a laptop or a desktop, depending on what i want. to a budget of around £450.

    - But i dont know which would be better!
    - So i figured that there must be quite a few Uni students here?

desktop. a laptop is pimp and nice, but tbh the laptop bit is of no benefit at all (ya wont take it to lectures, and if you do its no more useful than a pad n paper) and its more likely to get nicked

you'll get a lot more for your money if its a desktop too, and its cheaper to fix if somethign goes wrong. get a desktop with a tft and the space isnt an issue any more

Desktop. No contest. More for your money, you can get exactly what you want, and easy to upgrade. Plus all of what 5lab said.

tbh for £450 you are not gonna get the best PC although it will do for word excel etc. I say get the money then a job and buy a nice machine once you have 1k in the bank

desktop. unless you are going to super posh uni no one will take one to lectures and it costs more for a smaller screen. only benefit is if you are gonna put a wireless net card in it then you can have net everywhere in accomodation.

Desktop. Some sort of SFF will be ideal.

I'd say laptop, it's easier to move about when you move out during hols etc instead of lugging it to and from your home/halls/flat.

Desktop unless you have to get there and back on the train. Do you game much? Can you add to the 450? or are your parents wanting to buy you the whole thing?

£450 is not enough for a laptop that would be used as main machine...

I have both personally, my nice up to date desktop for gaming and working in my room, and a cheap (£200) 1.8ghz laptop to use on the move - i use mine for train trips or wireless net useage around the house (in the garden on a sunny day for example)

Best advice is get the desktop, and then add a cheap laptop later on if you think you will use it.

I think a cheap laptop would do fine.

    I'm with the desktop vote.

Much better value for what you get. Plus if your moving away from home for Uni you have to move your PC what, 2 or 3 times a year?

Wow, thanks for all the posts!

I could add to the £450 if i wanted, and possably get some more of my parents too. I dont think moveing it would be much of a problem thb, and if i got a desktop, i'd proberbly get a smallish unit, eather a little midi case, or a large sff (ie enought space not to be crowed, but not the excess of fresh air eather)
    - And i'd get a tft, prolly 17/18"

I dont game much atm, a bit of Unrealtornament (origanal) and NFSu, but nothing that wont play on my current pc (see sig)

Also Spud, where are you geting laptops for £200, or is that 2nd hand?

    1.8Ghz lappy for £200 is a bargain...

I'd get a desktop for uni, infact I did... but I have a car so its easier for me to move.
