Hexus Saving's. A question for you:

How much money, if any, do you save per month?

Will you always save or not save that much?

Are you actively thinking about the subject of your savings? And if so, is it a yearly thought, a monthly thought, or a day by day fret?

Always intrigued to know if anyone does still save "for a rainy day" ie for emergencies.

Or indeed if every penny earned goes towards bills, rent, mortgage etc.

I heard on the radio this am, that in the US, the average savings per person, is 0.00%

ie there ARE some savings, but it is so so tiny, and miniscule that it doesn't show on the charts.

The UK is slightly different, but that is changing, and we are putting money into cost of living, and lots of people are actually hoping that the parents will leave a princely sum to them!

Meantime, parents are realising the kids are earning lots of dough, and can sort themselves out, and why shouldn't they spend the money they've got on nicer stuff in their later years.

Interested to know what you guys think

I don't save anything significant really. Don't earn enough to live properly and still put money on one side. The odd bit trickles into the account but nowhere near as much as I should save I guess.

I'm from the camp that says "live life for today... because tomorrow you might get hit by that bus" so I tend to save very little of my money ... hell I think its about 10 quid a month but I tend to dip into this on rare occasions to pay for things like concerts, weekend raves in warehouses and stuff like that.

When I get older I'll probably save more, but hey... I'm young, got a ncie pension going so I'm not too worried

I'm always thinking of savings, but savings isn't the be all of money. I'd think best to say capital, then you can at least factor in people who buy houses. Thats a big huge savings account, that takes 25 years on the whole to mature. (or get how you want in your case Zak hehe)

I'm lucky enough to probably save about 40% of my take home per month. Though i figure now i'm no longer single that may drop a fair bit

I don't want my parents to leave me anything that i want to rely on. I've made it through uni, on my own, got my own car, rented place.

Its all about understanding the value of money. Saving money up and then spending on something special is what makes it all worthwhile in my opinion.

I'm appalling with my money, I just spend what I have.
I don't even have a good reason to fritter away my money, it's not on living expenses it's mainly on things to help me avoid the real world!
yes, I'm one of those annoying people that still lives with my parents and therefore only have to pay for transport.

the question of savings also includes the subject of "when do you spend what you saved?"

Cos its good to have it, but it's there for a reason.

When my sister was a kid, and se got her first job, she was adamant that she'd save everything she earned towards a house. Times change....people change..I knew that.

SO I told her to save half of what she earned everymonth, and spend the rest on stuff....cd's, films, meals out, clothes, etc.

After a year, she was to spend HALF of what she'd earned on something special and ave the other half for ever.

She lived with that for several years and it seemed to work for her. But for lots of people, saving is a daily thought.

And for others...not a jot of concern.

    Remember this? http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=38149

Ok so the photo has died, but there stood a pile of credit cards an inch high in pieces. That was the end of a long hard slog in terms of saving.

I then kept treating myself as and when and have never gone into debt since. I saved up a good amount of money and leave for the garage in an hour to go get my new car. I have borrowed money from my dad and my savings are gone, but I have worked bloody hard for it, without question and I don't feel guilty, not at all.

Saving £500 a month is VERY difficult for me, I have been doing it for 6 months already and I have set myself a challenge to pay back my dad within a year, its alot of money, but working hard and living within my means means that its possible.

And not only that but Im going to start my pension in the next few weeks, its something I have been meaning to do for a long time...

    Matt.

The only time money has come out, is to pay off serious debts in times of hardship, which will then be paid back in again once back at work.

good lass..thats what savings are for. Digging you out of "it", when you'd have to borrow otherwise.
