    Yeah, I've seen a lot of stories on this over the net. The California one will probably succeed and lead to a wave of settlements. Sometimes I think lawsuits are how California finances government operations. I remember when they snatched 2 billion USD from Microsoft.

    ^ Californian citizens have just voted against a raft of cost cutting measures championed by Arnie the terminator which will bring down their deficit.

    Anyway back on topic. I'm usually the first to snear at lawyers and their ilk but here we have a case of them doing a good job to put Sony BMG (Buncho' Mindless Gits) in their place. Atleast this case will highlight DRM software for what it is. Was only a matter of time before a trojan/virus exploited this software.

    If you want to read a good book regarding mass suing of large conglomerates for distribution of bad products read the fictional "King of Torts" by John Grisham. Would love to see Sony BMG have to pay $5000 to anyone who had the misfortune to install this crap on their machine.

    2 billion USD from Microsoft.
    Are you sure that wasn't 2 million? 2 Billion USD is quite a lot of money

    Anyway, as for Sony, I hope they get sued into next years BoD's Bonuses.

    edit: Also they should get in trouble for using the Music CD symbol when they're including data tracks on their CD's, thats bad, as its the sort of thing which destroys standards.

    it says 1.1 billion, but I'm pretty sure it was 2 billion when all was said and done.

    It's still a ton of money, even if it is 'only' 1 billion USD.

    Probably only because the rootkit was so crap that you could use it to hide anything with it. IE non-Sony nasties.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Yes this is totally Microsoft (more liek Micro$oft am i rite!?) taking advantage of Sony's cockup. Most people won't even know Microsoft are doing this, it's there to prevent problems occuring because of things which take advantage of this poor rootkit.

    If most people won't know microsoft is doing this, then how is microsoft taking advantage of this? I think it has a lot more to do with microsoft needs to patch this because IT IS A HUGE SECURITY RISK! This was bad for everybody.

    Crikies, if the bill & melinda gates foundation gave the world a clean renewable energy source, there'd be a few people swiftly saying how it gives small kids in manchester aids or something.

    MS are doing nothing wrong, there just endorsing Mark's findings, which i'd be suprised if anyone (other than that sony person) dosen't. (they'd have to be pretty stupid, or insainly good).

    XCP copy-protection software compiled against open-source LAME libraries, violates LGPL license (and by proxy, copyright of the mp3dev coders) in the process.

    let me guess how this'll pan out:

    Sony Rep: "most people don't know what a software license is, why should they care?"
