All Hexus,
Apparently, there's even more to the story as theinquirer.net reports. My new mission in life is to warn all who would unknowingly buy any cd/dvd from sony. read the story here.......

Not a good time for the Sony Publicity Machine following the latest news about dual pricing goods sold wholesale to internet outlets and High Street shop retail outlets... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4438298.stm

screw potential LGPL violations - we have full GPL and DMCA violations, including the code written by DVD Jon to crack Apple's iTMS files:Originally Posted by TheAnimus

goodness, this just keeps getting better and better doesn't it
I wish the mainstream media would pick this up a little better and make sure that people know just how wrong Sony is on this matter.
I see Amazon are offering a refund on all effected (should that be infected?) CD's.
Read on Slashdot earlier that Sony have arranged a buy back scheme with Amazon. So it looks like they will take all disks, not just ones you purchased through them. They are also sending emails to customers who did get them from Amazon.
The other issue not in debate here is Sony (and their DRM suppliers) breach of the LGPL copyrighted code.

How can Sony justify stealing others IP to protect their own?
Considering this with The RIAA president see
http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?p=635145
Simply Mr President
- Is IP theft ok if it is done by RIAA members?
- If the RIAA have the right to take steps that might include damaging peoples PCs, is it ok of the author of the LGPL code to do this to Sony BMG?
- Will Sony honour the LGPL terms and release all their infected titles under the LGPL also?
the LGPL doesn't require full source disclosure - it requires certain stipulations regarding library linking be met, and that the license be clearly advertised. sony didn't meet these terms - but even if they did, they'd be under no obligation to release any sourceOriginally Posted by speardane
however, as well as the stolen code from two LGPL projects (taglib and LAME, i think), there's stolen code from a full GPL project - the Apple iTMS DRM bypass code from VideoLan Player, by DVD Jon. THAT, they could quite easily get screwed on
simple, you or i, are poor, sony are rich and can do what the hell they want. The circle of life. Sun rise sun set, lets all hold hands and sing that TOTO song. I bless the rains down in africa (i bless the rains *ultra high pitch voice*).
Sony will take the slap on their rists and be off.
To be fair, its the company who sony subcontracted who broke all the rules. Shouldn't really tar them in the same brush no matter how bad they are!

Sony distributed the software under its own EULA, as far as I know. Culpable...
both companies have been trying to pass the buck on this - first4 designed a rootkit with stolen GPL and LGPL code, sony distributed it under cover of darkness, and claimed that it's not a problemOriginally Posted by smtkr
and the riaa claimed that sony were within their rights, that it's normal behaviour.
