Yeah its true, there are some people that abuse the martial arts. Gets a bad name for everyone else. Virtually no one knows that I do it at all, its literally just used for defence if a situation arises. I still turn my back and walk away from fights always unless its unavoidable then I do what has to be done to stop the person from attacking me. Just use necessary force and don't go overboard at all as you can do one heck of alot of damage with Aikido. You tend to find after putting some sort of wristlock on someone or knock them down to the ground they think twice about carrying on as they realise they are going to get really hurt.

I was taught once by a biker friend of mine who was a superb kickboxer, that in a street fight the best first attack is to run.

Ferral, you're correct it's an Aikido technique. The style I learn combines TKD, Aikido and Ju-Jitsu all together.

Riches - I would disagree. I've yet to meet a decent martial artist who would throw the first punch. Many people start martial arts, but those who stick with it through years of dedication aren't the one's you want to worry about. It's the people who learn 6 months of it then think they're Bruce Lee. They're the dangerous ones since they pick up technique which can do a lot of damage, but don't learn the self control to not use it, or use it in moderation.

Bazzlad, your friend is wise.. many could learn a great deal and take what he says on board...

Yeah, my ex instructor Steve Magson always says that to his new students. Best defense is to run away and hes a big bloke that is 5th dan now and can really look after himself.

Like you say its the idiots that learn 6 months and get a single belt and think they know everything and end up doing real harm. Constraint and thought is a must for all serious martial arts people.

lol, thats about the size of it.

I am fairly certain that when I shave my head I must give off the appearance of being someone who wants to fight

So now, instead, I have a comedy pineapple hair cut

Never had a fight, and would always have avoided it. However if my person were being threatened I'd defend myself, I would also defend a mate if something was happening to him as well.

Not been in a real fight for a few years I knocked a kid out a couple of months back at the bus stop for calling me something un-suitable for a family forum but that was hardly a fight. not many people who get arsey with me actually have a go anymore. I've started on people but they never got through with it.

As bazz says me being the size i am isn't going to automatically win me fights but it saves me alot of messing around because alot of people just won't start.

As long as you don't use excessive force you are ok. It has to be controlled. You put someone in a tight wristlock and they aint gonna try anything else just because it hurts so darned much !

Guess so. But in a world where criminals successfully take the people they've robbed to court, you never know.

Am quite interested into doing some form of martial arts. To improve my fitness, stamina, and there's of course the self defence issue.

Which one is something to start with. I'm not keen on something too contact based. Something more based upon increasing you fitness, with some self defence moves thrown in, as opposed to something like Kick Boxing.

    Interesting fact No 33b
The french word for fencing is l'escrime I wonder which word came first?

I have never been in, and never will be, in a proper fight.

On a side note, do any of you martial artists find that when your sparring or what have you, everything seems to slow down just a little, enough to allow you to conciously think what to do next, and how do move etc? At least it does when im fencing

    Never in a street fight.

In a sparing match or at a compy yes but never outside of the dojo.

I guess the reason is that when fighting against some who is using the same basic rules as you, you can predict their choice of moves. Where as ITRW they could do anything !

Have a look around for judo and sambo wrestling clubs.. Not contact based as in punching/kicking, but there is a fair bit of contact with the matting/choking/arm/leg locks etc.

In the past, I've trained in Kempo, Muay Thai (in Sandy Holts dojo! hoho), amateur wrestling, judo and sambo wrestling. All of them have their fun aspects, and you'll learn alot about yourself, what you can do, and how to control yourself.

I trained Muay Thai and Kempo in the usual junior groups for six years up until I was 14. When I was 15, I joined an Over 21s Judo club where I trained with 8 guys between 28 and 42 years old for three years. I ended up joining the Sambo Wrestling session as well, after beng persuaded by one of the meat-heads :>

You find that if you're training with men that are absolutely huge compared to you, you'll put that little extra bit of effort into becoming fitter, stronger, and improving your technique.

Had to quit a couple of years ago after injuring my shoulder rather badly (which has only just been sorted with an operation). I had alot of fun training and competing, and I look forward to hopefully get my fitness back on track, and continue with training

Do a bit of reserach on a martial art called Wing Chun.

Its a very scientific based martial art based on the centre line, closing the opponent down and using the opponents energy and power against him resulting in any experienced practitioner being able to cope with ppl much larger and much much stronger than themselves. This is due to it being designed by a woman.

It concentrates on blocks with simaltaneous counter-attacks..... It may be worth noting that a Wing Chun practitioner won the UK streetfighting event held in Sheffield area around 4-6 weeks ago....

Its the martial art that Bruce Lee learned before developing his own Jeet Kun Do which is heavily Wing Chun based.
