Yep, and they're always SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. We have a Sony AIT3 autoloader and that takes about 30 hours to do 600GB. I'm putting in for an external disk pack for our NAS device in this year's budget, which'll give me about 1.2TB of fast SCSI storage. We use BE10d and I'm looking at upgrading our domain controllers to 2003 Server so we can use a combination of the BE Continuous Protection Server and Volume Shadow Copy, then run to tape for DR purposes.
I have a feeling LTO is faster than AIT though.

LTO is considerably faster. Get LTO-3 if possible (and you will see the performance if you are on gigabit as badass pointed out!)
