I forgot people watched mtv and vh1 to gain a really informed and insightful opinion into hiphop.

A lot of I stuff listen to wouldn't even be remotely considered for mtv or any other mainstream media.

I can respect anybody elses opinion that disagrees with mine but to be honest I find your comment to be pretty ignorant and hurtful.

I don't think you even understand what 'hiphop' is in the first place, most people regard it as the culture of mcing, djing and break dancing.

Rap isn't all "bumps" and "Yeahs" and poor english, there are many talented producers out there who have provided incredible beats and articulate MCs who rap about a diverse range of issues that can be relevant to a lot of people.

You might say it's just music but it's something that I'm really passionate about and I dislike people who make silly comments when they don't really know what they're talking about.

Yeah please, your attack on hip-hop by using music channels as your reference just makes you look like a troll. The truth is that most good music doesn't have a video to go with it, so you are never going to see it on MTV. The exception this is stuff like Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin.

I've just been listening to a Keep It Solid Steel mix, with some Demon Boyz and Dred Scott on, and it's a breath of fresh air form the prepackaged pop that's fed down our throats as "hip-hop" by the labels looking for credibility.

    Edit: Voted DnB

Demon Boyz = hip hop, but more of a beastie boys knock off, IMO (****ty any way you look at it)
    Dred Scott = jazz

Give me a break. I recommend you listen to good music. Start with Alice n Chains and go from there.

First off your definition of rap must be slightly off because hip-hop music is a genre based around the art of DJ'ing and MC'ing that came out of the bronx and spread throughout the black communitys of new york before finding a wider audience.

Secondly while I don't hate rap it is a genre which from the outside to me at least appears to have become very stagnant. The rap music people are exposed to on a day to day basis is mostly alot of bump's, yeah's and guns n ho's, why should people make the effort to delve further into a genre when this is the music that is floating to the surface?

I know there are talented MC's and Producers in the business, the majority of production on Hip-Hop records within the mainstream is however half assed in my opinion, Adding a sample from an 80's t.v show or soul song over the top of a generic beat is not good production, a 9 year old could do it.

Alice in Chains isn't exactly the best place to start looking for good music

Hehe I don't like being schooled in the origins of hiphop by a metal fan but like you said I could've explained it better, but yes it's a culture based 'around the art' of djing and mcing.

It was invented in the Bronx by DJ Kool Herc who invented break beating then more DJs started to copy it and to began to evolve the art into cutting, scratching and etc.

Then MCing followed and it spread through out the 5 boroughs of New York and the rest is history.

I can understand why people tend to stay away from genre since it has become more or less saturated with "guns and hos".

I blame the record industry for this problem who are just in it for the money so a lot of talented artists and producers have been forced to go the independent and underground routes.

As of a result they hardly get any promotion at all or radioplay (since the industry has all the radio stations in their pocket anyway imo), so they have to rely on the word of mouth.

Back in the early of stages of it, it relied heavily on sampling but I don't think it's as simple as you mentioned it, producers like Kanye West rely heavily on sampling and he's considered to be one of the best atm.

But there are plenty of others who produced their music with synthisised drum machines and live instrumentation.

There's plenty of good artists worth checking out like The Roots, Mos Def, Common and etc who bring something different to rap music than your typical "guns and hos" rap.

I'm not trying to force people to like rap music but I'd rather they take an informed approach to it instead of dissing it completely when they've only listened to like 1 or 2 pop rap artists.

Other. I'm probably older than many of the members on here and i'm into 80's soul music (from the likes of the late Luther Vandross in particular). I'm also into modern jazz from people like Kenny G, Peter White and bands like Special FX, Spyrogyra and Acoustic Alchemy.

    BTW, what is 'fragging' ?

Aphex Twin are cool if I'm in the right mood. Ditto any music really. I will listen to, and enjoy, ANY type of music, except most pop music, garage and hip hop. No disrespect to it, I just don't like it.

Man you are so incredibly biased, anyone that doesn't agree with your music taste and is different seems to listen to ****ty music to you. The Hiphop culture and all of its subdivisions are popular for a reason, and there is a reason why hiphop itself is 40% or something of the whole music market combined (look it up somewhere, its bigger than any other music). Personally, I'm not into Hip-pop which concerns artists like 50 Cent and Eminem - in fact I despise them. I'm more into the production scene of hip hop which is really experimenting with melodic riffs and new sounds, and mostly American hiphop that isn't commercialised, but you seem to have been judging hiphop upon a limited range of artists, reguardless of the fact there are far more variants and styles out there. Listen to the instrumental of Cry Me A River by Justin Timberlake, its far more than just bump bump bump ssss ssss bump bump YEEEEEEAH!!!!!!!! bump bump UHHUHUH! bump bump bump <insert low class inner city colloquial grammer> bump bump boomba boomba bump bump and that was produced by one of the most respected hiphop producers out there.

Fact is, I can easily be stereotypical with any music like you can, with rock music, techno, whatever, but I am not, because its just a way to degenerate respect. I was into rock music some time ago, and I also enjoy DnB, indie, dance music, etc, and I know very well not to be biased as anyone can like any form of music, and nothing is wrong with any form of music at all.

If people enjoy it, thats all that matters. Biased posts like yours should really keep away from opinionated threads, such as this music one.

Hey look I can play this game too:
Alice in chains is crap. Listen to something proper.

But thats a lie - As long as people enjoy that music, I can accept it as good music.
